Organization under the Kitchen Sink

What is it with trying to keep the area under the kitchen sink organized? That is probably one of the most neglected spots in my kitchen. When you have nothing but a wide open space, I think it’s just easier to store things in there. But it can quickly become cluttered and pretty soon, you have no idea what’s underneath there anymore. This weekend I plan on doing something about it. I am going to take out everything and get rid of items that are no longer usable. But I’m not just going to toss the remaining stuff back inside. … Continue reading

Cleaning the Dishwasher

I do a pretty good job keeping up with my schedule in which I deep clean the appliances in my kitchen. Most of us tend to think about the stove and refrigerator. But if you have a dishwasher, this should be added to your list of deep cleaning every three or six months. Think about it this way. It’s an appliance used every day. It cleans dirty dishes. Still not getting the picture? That’s probably because you assume since it is an appliance that cleans, it doesn’t require cleaning. Not true. You might compare it to your teeth. You can … Continue reading

Faking Clean

When I was younger I had a housecleaning business. I cleaned two houses a day, most of them once a week. Although cleaning my house is not my favorite thing, I did like cleaning other peoples homes, it was nice to see the difference and I didn’t get sidetracked like I do at home. I learned a lot during that time, the biggest thing being that it’s easy to fool people. I would sometimes have customers call me for an emergency cleaning because they were having company. I usually had to tell them I didn’t have time because I was … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Mondays

Today’s blog is going to address how I clean in 30 minutes or less on Mondays. By keeping a consistent schedule, my house is ready for guests at the drop of a hat most of the time. I start off each morning with a cup of coffee. That is my fuel to get me started. I begin my cleaning routine within minutes of waking up. Why? I have a couple of reasons for this. The first is that I want to get the cleaning out of the way, so I can move on to bigger and better things. The second … Continue reading

Top 5 Cleaning Tips

Cleaning probably doesn’t rank very high on most people’s lists when it comes to an enjoyable activity. Although, I do know of some people who find it therapeutic. But for the majority of us, we would rather avoid it at all costs. I’m one of those who can think of a million other things I would rather be doing. So I try to make cleaning as quick and easy as possible. Here are my top 5 cleaning tips. 1 – An economical, easy way to keep your drains unclogged is to pour some baking soda down your drains (kitchen and … Continue reading

Drain Cleaner is Off Limits

I just found another reason to use all natural products to keep my drains free and clear. Effective January 1st in Illinois it will be harder to buy drain cleaner. In Illinois if you want to buy drain cleaners or similar products you will need to show your state issued ID along with current address and phone number, your birth date and how much of the product you are purchasing. Apparently the chemicals in drain cleaners can be used in meth labs, not to mention they can cause pretty severe burns if they are used incorrectly. I don’t want to … Continue reading

Clean As You Go

So the pies are done, so is the cranberry sauce. I’m kind of new to making everything from scratch. I had no idea that cranberries came from somewhere besides a can , I loved them with their jellied goodness, but now that I make actual cranberry sauce I could never go back to the can. The biggest challenge for me when making a big meal is cleanup. I always have good intentions, I’m going to clean as I go. This usually lasts through the first pie then I’m elbow deep in flour and can’t find the dog. I promised myself … Continue reading

My Favorite Household Cleaning Product: Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser

If I had to pick my absolute most favorite housecleaning product, do you know what it would be? It would be Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. I especially like the kind that is scented with Febreze. One of the first times I remember using this product was when I was a preschool teacher. I had to clean off the tables that were caked with dried paint and crayon marks. The spray we used wasn’t doing the job. Then someone suggested Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. It took hardly any effort to wipe those tables completely clean. I use this product for a … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Bathtub

Nothing can be more backbreaking than cleaning a bathtub, especially if you have let it go too long and want to bring it back to a semi-clean state. Even if you won’t be able to your tub back to its original look, at the very least you can make drastic improvements. However it is important to know what material your bathtub is made of, since you can cause damage to it by using the wrong kind of products. Some of the newer tubs are made of acrylic. This has a plastic feel and look to it. You may even be … Continue reading

Cleaning the Bathroom Sink

In this blog we are moving onto the bathroom, probably one of the least favorite places to clean for most anyone. This is definitely one room that you should keep up with on a daily basis. It will not only keep it cleaner but it will be more sanitary. The sink can become one disgusting mess, especially if you have members of the family that don’t clean up after themselves. There is nothing more revolting to me than going to brush my teeth and seeing clumps of dried toothpaste or mustache hair in the sink. So this is an area … Continue reading
