Seasonal Shoe Cleaning and Organizing

Tis the season for shoe purging in our home. Snow is in the forecast for the weekend, which means I have been frantically trying to dig out winter boots and put away summer sandals. Since our front entry closet doubles as a shoe and coat catch-all, I am very cognizant of my need to be as organized as possible, as one false placement could mean the unleashing of a flood of outwear. Before I store shoes for a given season I do a quick spot cleaning on the ones that need attention. For example, on my daughter’s summer canvas shoes … Continue reading

Cleaning Canvas

A major part of fall cleaning involves outdoor living spaces. Deck and patio furniture need to be cleaned before they are stored for the winter. In a previous blog I provided tips on how to clean patio furniture cushions and today I am covering canvas. Canvas covers a ton of outdoor furniture, from awnings to seat cushions. Fortunately, the durable material is fairly easy to clean. Some popular canvas cleaners can be purchased at discount retailers or patio furniture supply shops. Look for Tectron Foaming Nylon and Canvas Cleaner, Meguiar’s Canvas Cleaner or Starbrite Canvas Cleaner. The specially formulated products … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Barbeque Season

I’m thoroughly enjoying this warm weather. Most evenings will find me on the back patio, reading or working in the yard until the sun goes does. Since I’ve been spending so much time out there I can’t help but notice how bad my outdoor furniture looks. I’m having a barbeque for to celebrate summer so it’s time to get the yard furniture in shape. Some furniture is easier to clean than others and since I’m a yard sale junkie my furniture is an eclectic mix of everything. The plastic furniture is the easiest to clean. Usually all I need to … Continue reading

The Wall

This post isn’t really about “the wall” because it’s about our home. There are lots of walls in our home. And when I saw that there are lots of walls I say it somewhat happily. Divisions bring interest. Walls are the sort of things that keep our son’s toys mostly within the confines of what we call his room. There’s lots of room in his room, incidentally, and having a dedicated play place for the balls and blocks and puzzles and other objects he’s acquired from family members goes a long way towards keeping the rest of our home in … Continue reading

Battling Smelly Bathrooms

The family bathroom can be one of the smelliest rooms in the house, but not for the reasons you may be thinking of. Mold and mildew love to grow in warm, damp bathroom, and the smell generated from the living organisms can make you want to lose your lunch. Some homeowners don’t realize that mildew doesn’t grow exclusively on bathroom tile and grout. Rather, the ugly organism doesn’t discriminate and is able to grow and prosper on items such as clothing, shower curtains and upholstery. Since most people don’t place sofas in their bathrooms, they might not realize that there … Continue reading

Removing Super Stubborn Stains

As a mom of a very craftaholic little girl who has used walls, carpet and clothing as her canvases in the past, I know a thing or two about stain removal. In fact, I consider myself a stain removal expert. My top commercial stain removal products (in no particular order) are: Orange Miracle Biz Stain Activated Booster Goo-Gone OxiClean Carbona Stain Devil Simple Green I’m sure there are a number of other excellent commercial stain removers on the market, but I tend to stick with ones that I have had good experiences with, and the aforementioned products have served me … Continue reading

Lessons Learned The Hard Way: Avoid Oil Paints

I’m a pretty laid back person and encourage my children to always try new things. Not much irritates me or has made me fret over how white my carpets are or how clean the floors are. This peaceful aura was only accomplished after having raised five daughters, mostly on my own. However, several years ago we tried an art project that made me wish I had a time machine that would transport us back to the day before I conceived this bright idea. A fan of the Charlotte Mason method, I loved teaching my children about classical music, books, and … Continue reading

Dusty Art

If you have ever had the words “WASH ME” smeared in the layers of dust coating your car take heart this story may give you new perspective on your cleaning habits. If the test of a true artist comes from seeing art in everything then Scott Wade is well on his way to becoming the Picasso of dust art. Every few weeks Wade drives his Mini Cooper up and down a gravelly road near his Texas home until it is well coated in limestone dust. Then the self-proclaimed “dirty-car artist” goes to work. His car’s dusty windows become his canvas … Continue reading
