You Can Have It All

Why isn’t there a super hero single mother? Some days I feel like I must be super human to get it all done. Unfortunately I’m not super human and at the end of most days I’m just tired. Women in general seem to shoulder the lions share of child rearing and housekeeping, and have for a very long time. Things are getting better, more fathers are actively involved in raising their kids and more men are helping around the house. The majority still falls to the women, and when you are a single mother, there is no majority, it’s all … Continue reading

The Things We Do for Love: What I Do for My Husband

Last week I wrote The Things He Does for Love: Ghost Hunting Classes and told how I was surprised Wayne agreed to take the class, until he asked, “Don’t I always do things for you?” That reminded me of all the nice things he’s done just for me, which I listed. One reader commented that it did sound like Wayne loved me greatly, but she also wanted to know what I do for him. What a great question! And sort of a timely one, because Wayne and I were just discussing that very thing this past weekend. Ever since he’s … Continue reading

Obviously “Clean” Means Different Things to My Kids and Me

I hope you will come along with me on a little imaginary exercise…imagine that you are in my little, humble abode and you hear me say to one of my kids, “Please, clean you room before you leave for the weekend.” Later, you would hear the youngster say, “My room’s clean, I’m leaving now.” However, when I walk into the room as the door is slamming solidly downstairs, I see a bed that is askew, bits of paper all over the floor, an open closet door with something draped and hanging out of it, stacks of books and papers on … Continue reading

When Your Child Wants REVENGE

In my early experiences of trying to discipline my stepdaughter with ADHD, things got really rough. I mentioned in a previous blog that on one occasion we found that a can of paint had been mysteriously opened and poured purposely across our bathroom cabinets. We also found holes dug in the walls after we had tried standing her in the corner on an occasion when her behavior was outrageous. She had sneakily taken her fingernails and dug deep pits into the walls. How she did it without being observed is a mystery. On another occasion, she scribbled all over the … Continue reading

Who Needs Fancy Cleaning Products?

While many of today’s cleaning products come in a vast array of packages and offer as many promises for the amazing things they can do, you might be surprised to find that a large percentage of them are made mostly of water. Water is the best cleaning solution around and we all have plenty of it at our fingertips. Hot water will clean nearly any mess. Soaps and other ingredients are generally nothing more than lubricants added to make scrubbing easier. Other ingredients may include germ killing agents, but in most products, there is nothing special about the ingredients, except … Continue reading

More Dirty Jobs

The spring cleaning is finally done so why are there still messy jobs that need to be done? There are some things in every house that don’t get done very often, either because we don’t think aobut them or because we think it is going to be too much work. Now that your house is sparkling from all the spring cleaning, lets get those little jobs out of the way. Are your light fixtures a bug graveyard? Even when I think there are no bugs in my house, somehow there are dead ones in the light fixture. This really doesn’t … Continue reading

Green Uses for Vinegar – Part 1

Isn’t it a great thing when you can take something as simple as vinegar – something so cheap and easily assessable – and do great things around the house with it? For one thing, vinegar is great for cleaning household areas including the bathroom (i.e. getting rid of that bathtub ring and scum from the shower doors), countertops, soap dishes, the refrigerator, and cutting boards. My husband also buys dishwasher cleaners, but guess what? Putting a little vinegar in your dishwasher each month will clean it. And, if your coffee pot is getting a bit funky, run vinegar through one … Continue reading

Gummy Remote Control Buttons

Just when I think the house is clean I see something else. I’m kind of a surface cleaner. If you came into my house you would think it was clean, because on the surface, it is. I can’t stand clutter so there isn’t anything laying around. No papers on the desk or stuff piled on kitchen counters, that drives me crazy. Due to the lack of clutter, my house always looks clean. It’s my deep, dark cleaning secret, get rid of the clutter and you can fool most people. It’s all the little deep cleaning jobs that get me. Light … Continue reading
