Cleaning Up After a Sick Child

It was a lovely Saturday, or it would have been if I hadn’t woken up to a three year old throwing up on me. Poor little thing. Ivy spend the night last night and got sick in both of our beds. I don’t think my washer has run this much in one day since Hailey was little. Cleaning up vomit is never fun but if you don’t get to it immediately it will stain. So if you have a sick kid, as soon as you get them cleaned up throw the bedding in the tub, especially if it’s the middle … Continue reading

Facing Anger after Diagnosis

Of all of the emotions we go through after the diagnosis of our child, anger is perhaps the worst one. We can sometimes hold on to anger for too long and it begins to eat away at us, and the person we were before diagnosis. We can hold a grudge against a disease. We can scream and place blame on other people. These reactions get us nowhere. In the face of chronic illness, there isn’t anyone to blame. There isn’t anyone to yell at or hold a grudge against. Trying to do so won’t cure the disease, but will make … Continue reading

When Your Partner is Not Supportive

When we become pregnant, it is one of the most exciting times of our lives. We soon become consumed with eating right, avoiding anything that could potentially hurt the baby and tracking the changes in the baby’s development. Ideally, this is a fun time to be shared with your partner. However, it doesn’t always work this way. For a variety of reasons, some men are just not supportive of their pregnant wives. Whether the reason is an unplanned pregnancy, increased financial pressure or not feeling connected to the baby yet, the lack of interest is upsetting to the woman, to … Continue reading

The Lord is In the Details of our Lives

This past weekend, I had an experience that may seem small and insignificant to some, but it meant a lot to me. One of my children had the stomach flu. It is my least favorite thing as a parent. And, to put it simply, I have quite a bit of anxiety over it. I do not handle that type of sickness well at all, and it is very difficult for me every single time. Well, my child seemed to be getting better, and as usual, I felt myself relax and realize that all would be OK. A few days later, … Continue reading

Green Uses for Vinegar – Part 1

Isn’t it a great thing when you can take something as simple as vinegar – something so cheap and easily assessable – and do great things around the house with it? For one thing, vinegar is great for cleaning household areas including the bathroom (i.e. getting rid of that bathtub ring and scum from the shower doors), countertops, soap dishes, the refrigerator, and cutting boards. My husband also buys dishwasher cleaners, but guess what? Putting a little vinegar in your dishwasher each month will clean it. And, if your coffee pot is getting a bit funky, run vinegar through one … Continue reading

Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Mommy

Taking care of your children when you are sick can be more than challenging as a single parent. There’s no one there to take care of the kids while you are stuck in bed. You have no choice but to do it yourself. While getting sick is inevitable, here are some tips and tricks to keep it from happening quite as often. Start with cutting down on your stress load. The more stressed you are the more susceptible you are to illness. As a single parent this may seem nearly impossible since you are doing the work of two, but … Continue reading

Laundry Timesavers

Everyone is looking for a way to save time. In my mind time spent doing housework is wasted time. I could use that time to spend with the people I love or pursuing hobbies I enjoy. So I’m always looking for ways to streamline, to get things done. These tips may not make for perfection, but they will be good enough. I’m going to start with laundry. From the dirty clothes hamper back to the drawer or closet there are little things you can do to save time. The first thing I do is sort the laundry as I go. … Continue reading

Germs Among Us

I’m not 100% positive, but I think my brain is hemorrhaging. My eyes sting, my sinuses are on fire, and my temples are sizzling from what feels like an acid-like substance that’s coursing through my veins instead of blood. Oh, and my 7-year-old is going on week three of her cold from purgatory. And by purgatory I mean one step away from Hell, not Heaven. Our doctor, along with every other health expert I’ve seen yapping it up on morning news shows this week, keep reminding us to wash our hands “thoroughly,” as we are smack in the middle of … Continue reading

Fresh Air and Sunshine

I can’t seem to shake this cold. All the cleaning and disinfecting does not seem to be helping. Today I decided to let Mother Nature help get rid of the germs. It was sunny but still cold so I turned off the furnace, put on a coat and opened all the doors and windows. I left the house open for about ten minutes. Long enough to be able to feel the outside air moving around in the house and then I shut everything up. Already the house seems cleaner, fresher, like all the negative energy and germs have been blown … Continue reading

Mommy’s Little Helper…Sort of

I have been blessed with a child who loves to help; I mean really loves to help. If Mommy is trying to fold the laundry he thinks he needs to “fold” too. After which he promptly feels the need to jump into each of the piles, because what’s the sense in folding laundry if you’re not going to jump in it afterward, right? At three years old, he loves to sweep, mop, vacuum, clean bathrooms, do laundry, and just about anything else around the house. Having him “help” may take me three times as long, but he is learning little … Continue reading
