Spring Cleaning: Rugs

I could have easily spent the day on my porch pounding a winter’s worth of dust and debris from my kitchen and bathroom rugs… if it weren’t for the fact that we were pummeled with more than 14 inches of snow last night. Oh, and did I mention the 38 mph winds? So much for spring, but what can you expect living in Wisconsin. Part of my spring cleaning ritual is deep cleaning all of the rugs I have placed around the house. Some homeowners swap out rugs at the end of each season. However, my decor is very simple, … Continue reading

Cleaning with a Shark

I am a sucker for TV infomercials. I’m enthralled by tomatoes that grow upside down, knives that cut through rusty nails and cupcakes the size of small third countries. However, the one product that I actively pursued owning after seeing it suck up a bowling ball on national TV was the Shark handheld vacuum. Yes, I am the proud owner of the Shark 15.6-Volt Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner with Motorized Brush. And yes, it actually works. Whereas I have yet to test its Twister Cyclonic technology on a bowling ball, the cleaner works well sucking up cereal and glitter spills. … Continue reading

Housekeeping in 2013

Getting ready to kiss 2012 goodbye, I am eager to embrace the New Year.  But I am also ready to conquer what I believe has become a lost art in today’s society, housekeeping. If you think about it, it’s kind of an old-fashioned word.  Homemaking has mostly replaced it.  But it means one and the same. It can also be a concept viewed in a negative light.  It might conjure up images of women donning aprons, scrubbing the floor on their hands and knees (forget the Shark Steam Mop!).  Or you might picture June Cleaver in her dress and heels, … Continue reading

Care of Your Floors

We have tackled a couple of housekeeping tips in our living areas but will end with the care of floors. Some living areas are carpeted and some have hardwood floors. So the type of care you give to your floors will depend on this. I only have hardwood floors, with just a couple of rooms in my entire house being carpeted. So I don’t do much with vacuuming and when I do, I use a fairly common type of vacuum. From what I understand however, the dream machine to own if you have carpeting is a Dyson. All you Dyson … Continue reading

A Neat Idea For A Home-Based Business

There are some people out there who just have a knack for cleaning. Unfortunately, I am not one of them but I have figured how to keep my home looking mostly tidy most of the time. If you know how to clean well and you do not mind cleaning, you may be able to turn your skills into a home-based business. With more and more families leading busier and busier lives, sometimes people choose to take some tasks off of their plates by paying others to do them. If a family decides that they are going to hire someone for … Continue reading

Mold Eradication

My college roommate lives in a charming house in the southeastern part of Wisconsin. She and her husband bought it for practically nothing and renovated the heck out of it. The reason the fixer-upper was such a steal was that it had a major mold problem. Personally, I wouldn’t have gone near the place in its original condition, but they saw a gem amongst the rubble. Still, mold is nothing to sneeze at. Or is it? According to doctors, mold exposure can lead to sinus problems, eye irritation, and wheezing. That’s why it is so important to eradicate mold from … Continue reading

Pets vs. Your Carpet

Removing pet stains from carpets is never a good time. However, cleaning is inevitable if your dog or cat spends the majority of his time indoors. Accidents happen and when they do timing is everything. The key to salvaging your carpet from pet feces or urine is to act quickly and use effective cleaners. As soon as you spot a pet stain reach for rags or absorbent paper towels to soak or wipe up the mess. The longer you let animal urine or feces sit on carpeting the worse the smell gets. If you are dealing primarily with urine stains, … Continue reading

Traveling To Hawaii—With Your Pet

Our retired neighbors would never dream of vacationing without their four-legged love child Jake. I swear Jake—a bichon frise–has seen more of this country than I have. However, up until about a month ago, the pampered pooch had never been to paradise. Because of what they thought would be complicated pet preparations, my neighbors never considered Hawaii a viable vacation destination. That all changed when my neighbors received free tickets to Oahu. It was only then that they learned that some hotels in Hawaii offer amazing amenities for traveling pets. They read a review actress and dog owner Cameron Diaz … Continue reading
