Cleaning Out the Car

You know that things are bad in your car when a ten-year-old complains that it is gross. We have had a couple of strange weeks, so my normal policy of having everyone grab at least three things that don’t belong each time they leave the car just wasn’t working. I hit the last straw yesterday when two things occurred: my daughter pulled out an old and yellowed cheese stick from behind a seat, and the carpooling kids didn’t want to put on their seat belts because they were afraid of all of the crumbs. “They are huge crumbs. It isn’t … Continue reading

Housework and Home Business

My colleague, Sara Berthiaume, recently wrote a post called, Keeping House While Working from Home. She touches on an issue that many work at home moms are faced with. How in the world can you keep your home clean while building a business from home? Keeping a home is a big job. Don’t be fooled by those who want you to believe if you keep a home and raise a family you are not doing enough. Believe me, you are doing plenty! Caring for a home and a family can be overwhelming so when you add to it a home … Continue reading

Keeping Your Cubicle Clean

It seems like we are all cubicle dwellers these days. It’s hard to find someone in an office who doesn’t spend the largest portion of their day in a cubicle. It has become our home away from home. People do everything in their cubicle, brush their hair, do their make up, apply lotion, eat lunch and blow their noses. Some people at work even clip their nails in their cubicles. This makes our cubicles one of the most germ laden “rooms” in our house. A recent study found 549 different kinds of bacteria in office cubicles, most of which come … Continue reading

Home Based Business Idea – Virtual Assistant

In honor of Administrative Professionals’ Day, I would like to mention a home – based business idea that is always in demand – the Virtual Assistant. Virtual Assistants can work full time or part time, for one client or multiple clients, and on long term or short term assignments. Virtual Assistants answer phones, reply to emails, draft documents, enter data, create reports, and so much more. The best part is, they do it all from the comfort of their own homes. If you work or have worked in an administrative capacity, becoming a Virtual Assistant is a great way to … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning The Files

In the middle of all this spring cleaning don’t forget your home office and all the paperwork that accumulates in there. I try to clean my files at tax time, save what I need and purge what I don’t. Even with the best of intentions the filing cabinet is still busting at the seams before I know it. To really clean things out and get a handle on the paper mess you should have a good shredder and a fireproof box. A bank safety deposit box is great for storing important documents but you can’t always get to them when … Continue reading

Home Sweet Cubicle

Do you spend eight hours of your day in a cubicle? I do, sometimes more than eight hours a day. It is my home away from home and it looks like it. I have a Minnie Mouse coffee cup for my pens, a white board that I write cute sayings on and tons of family pictures. If I have to spend my life in a box I want it to at least me a homey, comfortable box. I have slippers under my desk because I hate to wear shoes and a blanket for those times the office is too chilly. … Continue reading

Working from Home has Some Disadvantages

It can be difficult for parents to find a reliable source of childcare while they are working. If your child has special needs, then you may find it hard to find caregivers that have the knowledge about how to properly care for your child. Telecommuting may open up some options. It also can bring on new problems. There are a lot of companies that allow employees to work from home, or telecommute. In general, this is something that may be possible for office workers, or people who do data entry. If your job is in retail, or the food service … Continue reading

Home Based Business Idea – Vending Machines

Here is another idea from the mythical device known as the home-based business idea generator. It is something that I have heard about, but I had not decided to look into it until today. I am sure that all of you have used a vending machine at one time or another, whether at work, school, the mall, or somewhere else. Did you know that many vending machines are operated by people who work from home? There are so many types of vending machines out there and so many different products that you can fill them with. Researching your options can … Continue reading

Cleaning At Work

It seems like everyone at work is sick. We always hear about sick building syndrome and how office buildings with poor ventilation systems add to the number of sick days employees take. I think it’s caused by something else- poor housekeeping. Every desk I walk by is a dirty, dusty mess. The kitchen area is always a disaster, the counters, the tables, the microwaves and the refrigerators. It’s like everyone thinks their mother is going to come in and clean up after them. Not only does it look bad but it’s a breeding ground for germs. It’s hard for me … Continue reading

More Tips for Cleaning the Home Office

For many telecommuters the home office is the room in the house that gets the most use, next to the kitchen. Given all the time that is spent there, you can expect that it would need a thorough cleaning on a regular basis. In a previous blog I provided tips on how to clean computers and other high-tech gadgets that are stored in the home office. Once you’ve cleaned the delicate items, you’ll want to dust the entire room. When dusting, start from the top and work your way down. You can either use a feather duster and wipe it … Continue reading
