Speed Cleaning

Have you ever received that last minute call, “Guess who’s coming over for dinner tonight honey?”  Or you suddenly remembered that so-and-so was stopping by to go over notes for an upcoming meeting. Maybe you have family coming by but you got lost in a good book.  Suddenly you look at the clock and realize you have an hour before they arrive. All of these scenarios can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and unprepared.  But this is where speed cleaning comes in. Speed cleaning requires fast movement.  In fact, you need to set a timer so that you have a deadline … Continue reading

Housekeeping in 2013

Getting ready to kiss 2012 goodbye, I am eager to embrace the New Year.  But I am also ready to conquer what I believe has become a lost art in today’s society, housekeeping. If you think about it, it’s kind of an old-fashioned word.  Homemaking has mostly replaced it.  But it means one and the same. It can also be a concept viewed in a negative light.  It might conjure up images of women donning aprons, scrubbing the floor on their hands and knees (forget the Shark Steam Mop!).  Or you might picture June Cleaver in her dress and heels, … Continue reading

Shedding Season

It’s that time of the year, my Golden Retriever is shedding. Her great balls of fur look like tumbleweeds and detract from the “clean” look of my home. This is one of those times I am grateful for hardwood floors. I remember the days of carpeting and how difficult it could be to get fur out of the fibers. Needless to say I vacuumed on a daily basis, which is one of the keys to tackling dog hair. Of course, brushing your dog is also important. When I do this on a daily basis, it greatly reduces the amount of … Continue reading

Daily Cleaning Routine

Do you have a daily cleaning routine? Whether you call it this or daily chores, it’s important to have something in place so that you can keep up. Some things must necessarily be done on a daily basis, such as washing dishes. Other things depend on your standards, the number of people in your family and the expectations. For instance, some of the things in my home that must be done daily include laundry, sweeping, dishes, wiping counters, surface cleaning of the bathroom, making beds and so on. Everyone’s daily list will look different. If you can set aside a … Continue reading

Tired, So Very Tired

I just read an article that said people spend and average of 673 hours per year doing housework. No wonder I’m so tired! If you break it down it doesn’t seem like that much. It’s about 13 hours per week or 1.85 hours a day. When you look at it that way, it’s easy to see where the time goes. When you come home from work the housekeeping begins, you check the mail, sort and deal with that, let the dogs out, start dinner, throw in a load of laundry, hang up the kids jackets, unload the dishwasher, help with … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Weekends

We are finally at the end of my blog series on cleaning in 30 minutes or less. What better way to wrap it up than talking about the weekend. I don’t know about you, but I like to keep my weekends as free as possible. That means I don’t want to spend hours cleaning. I would rather enjoy activities or just a day of relaxing. Despite working full-time during the week, because of my routine, I am still able to tackle important areas of my home and leave my weekends relatively free of chores. That is always my number one … Continue reading

Cleaning Timesavers

On to more time savers. Yesterday I wrote about time saving laundry tips, now it’s time to tackle the cleaning itself. We all dread it but it has to be done. Why not find ways to do it faster and maybe even easier. Think about the chore you dread. Is it cleaning the kitchen after dinner. Vacuuming? Cleaning off your nightstand? Whatever it is that you dread and put off, time it. When I look at the kitchen after dinner all I can see if a huge amount of time spent cleaning, especially since I no longer use my dishwasher … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Wednesdays

Today’s blog moves onto cleaning in 30 minutes or less on Wednesdays. By now I hope you understand that I am not trying to tell you what to clean and when. Instead, I want you to see how by spreading things out and picking the best days to do these chores, you are making it easier and quicker to clean. On Wednesdays I only do my quick wipe down in the kitchen because this is the day that I focus on deep cleaning my bathroom. Since it takes just a couple of minutes to do my kitchen routine, it leaves … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Tuesdays

In my last blog, I continued with my series on how I clean my house in 30 minutes or less each day. I mentioned that there were two types of cleaning I do Monday through Sunday, a quick wipe down in the kitchen and bathroom. So on Tuesdays I do my usual kitchen and bathroom routine. Other than that, this is a fairly light day of housework. I have made Tuesdays light because not only do I have work to complete but I am out of the house for part of the day. I sweep the stairs going down to … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less: Mondays

Today’s blog is going to address how I clean in 30 minutes or less on Mondays. By keeping a consistent schedule, my house is ready for guests at the drop of a hat most of the time. I start off each morning with a cup of coffee. That is my fuel to get me started. I begin my cleaning routine within minutes of waking up. Why? I have a couple of reasons for this. The first is that I want to get the cleaning out of the way, so I can move on to bigger and better things. The second … Continue reading
