A Little Bit Greener

I’m just about ready to give up housecleaning. Everything I read tells me it’s bad for the planet, the chemicals in cleaners are polluting the air and water and all those containers are winding up in the landfill. Of course I’m being just a little facetious, but you see what I’m saying. The more we try to do right – keeping our homes clean and germ free, the more harm we do to the environment. I’m sure that most of us are doing what we can to solve this problem but I do know that for me, using only green … Continue reading

Chemical Laden Cleaners- I Miss You

I have a confession to make… I miss unhealthy, non green cleaning. I really do. Today I found myself in the cleanser aisle at the grocery store coveting all those wonderful, good smelling products. That nifty little disposable toilet wand, I want to try it, it looks like so much fun and the picture on the package shows a sparkling toilet. Wait, a disposable toilet brush? More junk for the land fill. All those lovely cleaning products calling to me with their pretty labels and intoxicating scents. I want my house to smell like a pine forest after I scrub … Continue reading

Do We Need All Those Wonder Cleaners?

There are so many cleaners on the market, one for every job. What did we do before these fabulous companies came up with a product for everything? If you bought one of each product the manufacturers want to convince you that you must have in order to have a clean home, you would have a very full cleaning basket. The list goes on and on. For every stain there is a remover, every substance or surface, a special cleaner. I used to cringe every time I opened the cabinet under my sink; things were always falling out, getting spilled, making … Continue reading

Go-To Cleaners

Like many homeowners I have a core collection of cleaners that I immediately reach for when I am in a jam. They include: Lysol, Clorox, and X-14. I use a variety of Clorox products, but they all work about the same. No surprise there since they all contain bleach as their active ingredient. Now that I think about it, I could probably save a ton of money if I simply bought a few gallons of bleach, diluted it with water, and used it to clean multiple surfaces. In addition to my trio of favorites, I also find Eco Moldzyme to … Continue reading

Commercial Green Cleaners

Organic or “green” cleaners are no longer reserved for hippies who know a thing or two about mixing witch hazel and beeswax. Big name brands including, SC Johnson, which sells Windex, Pledge, Drano, Shout, and host of other household cleaning products offers a complete line of environmentally friendly products. The company has been using Greenlist labeling since 2001 to note their commercially produced “green” cleaners. Generally, the Greenlist items have fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than the traditional products. For example, since the early 2000s, Pledge has been reformulated for better biodegradability and less VOC pollutants. In addition, Fantastik Orange … Continue reading

Why I Don’t Like Green Cleaners

While using green cleaners can be better than using more traditional commercial cleaners, I can not say that I am jumping up and down to buy them and use them. I have to admit that many of these cleaners come in attractive and stylish bottles and contain very pleasant scents. Despite this, there are several reasons that these cleaners have not convinced me, yet, to purchase and use them on a regular basis. Here is why. Most of these green cleaners are not available for purchase in bulk. Because of this, these cleaners have an impact on the environment through … Continue reading

Natural Cleaning Products are Getting Better

All natural cleaning is really coming into it’s own. More and more people are using vinegar to clean instead of harsher chemicals, and we are talking about it, on blogs, in forums and where ever women talk about cleaning. There is a move towards products that are safer for our families and better for the environment. Heinz, who currently makes more than 7.5 million gallons of vinegar a year for American households has announced it will be making a stronger vinegar. The new product will be 20% stronger than traditional vinegar and still be safe for cooking. This move shows … Continue reading

Toddlers and Cleaning Supplies

How do you store your cleaning supplies? Do you even give any thought to how you store them? I know I don’t think about it much, I store them here, there and everywhere. Under the kitchen sink of course, then there is a tote in the linen closet, each bathroom has stuff to keep the toilet clean. In each location as well I have a bag of cleaning rags, I don’t want to run to another room to wipe down the bathroom counters. The biggest issues with storing cleaners are safety ones. Are there little ones in your house who … Continue reading

Newlywed Gift

Do you know a newly married couple just setting up housekeeping? Still looking for the perfect gift? How about a cleaning basket? The new couple will get plenty of towels, coasters, sheets, glasses and toasters so give them something they will really use. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, cleaning supplies seemed so expensive and no matter what I bought I still needed more, not to mention I needed it most when I could afford it least. It’s not a very romantic gift but it is one they will use, over and over again. You can make … Continue reading

Feel Good Cleaning Products

Nothing makes me happier than an empty dishwasher and a full refrigerator. I mean, really, is there anything in life more pleasing to a busy mom than a clean house? Other than it staying clean for more than 45 minutes? Or having a band of cleaning fairies sweep into your home each week and sanitize it from top to bottom for free? All wishful thinking; still, there is something to be said about feel good cleaning. For some, using eco-friendly cleaning products that don’t force them to compromise their ethics is one way to make cleaning more tolerable. Organic cleaners … Continue reading
