Daily Prioritizing

I don’t know if you are like me but there are many days where I feel like I will never be able to accomplish everything I have to do. In fact, there are too many days when that is exactly what happens. I end the day feeling like I have somehow failed because not everything on my mental “to-do” list was done. The problem is that we haven’t learned the importance of putting in place daily priorities. Instead we just take on this and that without considering whether it is doable. Do you feel like your home is oftentimes the … Continue reading

Organizing Your Home Office

Do you have a home office? Whether you work from home or you have a spot where you take care of your bills and other paperwork, you can make this area easier to handle if it is organized. Last weekend I spent most of it putting together a new organizational system in my home office. I first went out and purchased the following: label maker, large box of file folders, notebooks and a binder. I first labeled all of my folders. I have a set labeled 1-31 (for the days of the month) and then another set labeled with the … Continue reading

Designated Days

In the “old days” they used to designate certain days for specific tasks. For instance there was wash day and market day. While there may have been other tasks accomplished on those days, there was a particular focus on certain things. If you are looking to put a new spin on keeping up with the house, why not bring back some of those old ways in a modernized version? Of course, this will depend on the unique needs of your family and how you run your household. One day could be “office day.” If you run a home-based business, you … Continue reading

Everything Has a Place

I think a lot of our housekeeping problems could be solved if we just learned to pick up after ourselves. Of course, that also means teaching your family to do the same. You have probably heard the phrase, “Everything has a place.” It really is true. The key is finding that place and then maintaining it. Maintenance in a home is done by the simple act of picking up and putting away. Think about the little ways this can be done, which could really add up. Or perhaps it would help to consider how not picking up the little things … Continue reading

Managing Your Mail

We often think of clutter in the way of large items and “stuff.” But paper can be a real source of clutter, especially the mail. This is a real thorn in my side because although I manage my mail, my husband doesn’t. So he has piles of paper, all stuff that has come in the mail, in various areas. Honestly, if it weren’t for online bill paying, I don’t know how he would do it because you can’t find anything. But I will ignore his piles and just share with you what I have done. And yes, I have tried … Continue reading

Breaking Big Tasks Down Into Smaller Ones

If you live in a one-room house, the idea of tackling chores might not be so bad. But I would guess this isn’t the case for most of us. So for every room that makes up the inside of your home, the more work there is to be done. When I think about going through the rooms of my house to do my chores, it can feel a bit overwhelming. However there are ways to break your big tasks down into smaller ones. For instance, go through each room but only focus on those things that are most visible. For … Continue reading

The Pack Rat

I have only watched a couple episodes of “Hoarders” but it was enough to bring a sickening feeling to my stomach. To me it is so sad that a person can live in a home that is so dirty or cluttered it is unsafe. While most of us probably wouldn’t call ourselves a hoarder, there are some who could be classified as a “mini” version of one, a pack rat. A pack rat tends to save things that could just as well be given away or thrown away. What you learn through this show on hoarding is that the person … Continue reading

Intentional about Your Schedule

One of my biggest struggles in working from home is coming up with a workable schedule. I try one thing to see if it works and when it doesn’t, I try something else. Or I tweak my schedule one week and then implement major changes the next. Of all my “intentionals” for the year 2012, this is probably the biggest one. I don’t know why I can’t stick to a schedule. I guess I’m just one of those people that prefer something different everyday. Yet I know that I would be much more productive if I stuck to one. After … Continue reading

But I’m Not Supermom

It’s all too common for a homeschooling mom to feel that she has to be Supermom. With housework and homework to juggle, it sure seems like you have to put on a cape in order to make it all work, and then when someone hears that you homeschool, what’s the first thing they say? “How do you do it? You must be Supermom!” This creates a false sense of needing to excel. After all, if everyone thinks we’re perfect, doesn’t that mean we have to be perfect? Otherwise, aren’t we letting people believe things about us that aren’t true? I … Continue reading

How to Make Workouts a Priority During the Holiday Season

If the season’s ho, ho, ho and mistletoe has thrown off your fitness routine you are not alone. Millions of gym goers take a break from exercising during the holidays, much to the chagrin of health experts who maintain that fitness should be a priority regardless of how busy you are. Fitness gurus say we should all be making time in our day for exercise, especially during the hectic holiday period. Experts say maintaining a workout schedule is even more important this time of year because most of us tend to eat more than usual. As such, doctors recommend not … Continue reading
