Ahhh, Technology

Can you imagine what it was like to churn your own butter, make your own clothes and then wash them in a nearby creek? Just the thought of the amount of work that went into keeping a family clothed and fed in pioneer days makes me tired. The time and energy that went into maintaining a home is mind boggling. Luckily for us, we have all of these modern conveniences. We have dishwashers to wash our dishes , washing machines to clean our clothes and vacuum cleaners to keep our floors clean. Lawn mowers are self propelled or riding, there … Continue reading

Dishwasher Fungus

Today I read a news article about fungus growing in dishwashers. To make it even more disturbing they tested two dishwashers right here in Utah where I live and they both tested positive for fungus. Seems that in a recent study 62% of dishwashers were found to have fungus growing in them, six out of ten seems like quite a lot to me. I spent the rest of the day nervously searching the internet for “fungus in dishwasher” while waiting to get off work so I could go home and check out my fungus ridden dishwasher. Personally I wouldn’t think … Continue reading

Kitchen Storage Cleaning Tips

Each and every time I place Tupperware or other plastic food storage containers in the dishwasher, I am met with disastrous results. Consequently, I have taken to hand washing all of my containers, even the higher quality ones that are made from hard plastic and resist stains. The main problem with placing plastic food storage containers in the dishwasher is that they warp to the point where you cannot get the lids to secure onto the bottoms. Now, I clean the containers with a mixture of water, vinegar, ammonia and baking soda. For containers with tough spaghetti sauce stains I … Continue reading

Cleaning Cabinets

I’ve always dreamed of having specialty cabinets with glass inserts throughout my kitchen. Then, I open my wood ones and reality sets in. For starters, I don’t own pretty china and I would have to seriously overhaul my methods of organization (or lack thereof) given that all my house guests would be able to see the guts of my cabinets if I had the glass inserts installed. Cleaning and organizing kitchen cabinets is no easy task, especially if you have collected a number of dishes and accessories over the years. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to make … Continue reading

How Clean is Your Dishwasher?

Nothing will have you running to the store for Super Iron Out faster than opening your dishwasher and seeing a slew of rust spots on your favorite utensils. Whink Rust Stain Remover is also a decent product that helps remove rust stains from appliances, such as dishwashers. However, whenever I see rust stains on my dishes I immediately clear out the dishwasher and fill the machine’s soap dispenser cup with Super Iron Out. I also sprinkle a bit on the bottom of the dishwasher too before running the washer on a regular cycle. If you don’t have commercial rust stain … Continue reading

Cleaning Schedules

Most people set aside one day a week to deep clean their home. When I was single I saved my big cleaning projects for Saturday morning. These days my schedule is less predictable, so I pencil in weekly cleanings on a day that I have the least amount of running around to do. I work well with lists, so when it came time to create a comprehensive cleaning schedule I grabbed a notebook and toured my home room by room to determine what tasks needed to be accomplished in each on a weekly basis. I divided my notebook pages into … Continue reading

Everyday Cleaning

Is it possible to skip daily cleaning routines? I suppose if you live alone there would be days you could pass on cleaning, but if you have a spouse or children, I don’t see how you could avoid cleaning at least a little each day, especially when it comes to dishes and laundry. There are many days when I wish that I could ditch the dishes or the laundry (OH!MY!WORD! the laundry!), but I don’t see how it would be possible to do so. After all, we only have so many forks and spoons… and pairs of underwear, so going … Continue reading

Home Chore List: Daily Cleaning Chores (2)

Have you been struggling with getting everything done around your home? It is wonderful to have a clean and organized home, but sometimes, well, most of the time, it can be tough to maintain. Or as Shelbybear62, a busy mom, employee and student said, it is a struggle keeping all of those balls in the air. I have found that having a list with set chores on it really helps me from getting that overwhelmed feeling and not knowing where to start. If you have been following this series, on Friday I gave you some of the daily chore list. … Continue reading
