Abuse of Everyday Products

When my children were younger, I always made sure all medicines were locked up and in a spot they couldn’t be reached. Now that they are teens, it isn’t a concern…but apparently it should be. A new study just came out that says teens are starting to abuse over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. We’re not talking prescription medication (which of course, can also be a problem) but everyday medicines such as decongestants and cough syrup. Hey, it’s easy access. And it’s becoming more common because of the increased efforts to keep illicit drugs out of their hands. The study also indicates that … Continue reading

Spot Cleaning the Bathroom

My least favorite room to clean is the bathroom. But you can make cleaning the bathroom easier by spot cleaning. Spot cleaning in the bathroom should be done as necessary but I also recommend light cleaning on a daily basis. If you do, you will find that it only becomes necessary to deep clean once-a-week. And you have the assurance that your bathroom is always ready for guests. To make spot cleaning easier, keep cleaning supplies in your bathroom. If you have to retrieve them from another room, you are more likely to forget or just skip it. For cleaning … Continue reading

Cleaning Up After Your Pet

I just adopted a new dog. She is a mix of a bit of everything, about 50 pounds and the sweetest thing ever. I already have a dog, a shih tzu, so I wasn’t completely unprepared but the dogs are so different that I’ve had to make some adjustments. First, that pile of shoes by the door? It’s gotta go, she doesn’t chew shoes, so far but she will gnaw on any socks that are left out. My shih tzu doesn’t shed, she has hair instead of fur so she has to be groomed regularly, usually this means a trip … Continue reading

New Uses For Everyday Items

I’m always looking for ways to make cleaning easier and less of a hassle and I love when I find unusual ways to clean ordinary things. Here are some of my most recent finds: *Baby oil to polish chrome. You can use this on everything from hubcaps to faucets, pretty nifty. You can also use it to shine a stainless steel sink after you clean it. It might be my imagination but it seems to keep it cleaner longer as well. *Broom to dust. You know those out of reach cobwebs and light fixtures? Just wrap your broom with an … Continue reading

Cleaning Laminate Flooring

I used to love hardwood floors. But my love has now turned to laminate flooring. So we are slowly starting to put that throughout our house. Laminate flooring is pretty inexpensive and comes in all sorts of colors and styles. It is also very durable. If you haven’t invested in laminate flooring, I highly recommend it. But what about cleaning? Cleaning laminate flooring is different than other types of flooring. What I noticed in the beginning of trying to keep my floors clean is that they streak very easily. The surface is so glossy that any spots or streaks left … Continue reading

Two Favorite Cleaning Products

Last year when I got married, I moved into my husband’s house and wow! Cleaning a whole house, instead of just my previous bedroom, kept me really busy. I enjoy having a house and taking care of it, but cleaning it can be a big chore if I don’t stay on top of it. To make cleaning a more speeding process I have found some favorite products to help me do a quick clean. To clean floors I love the Swiffer WetJet! They work great on wood, tile, linoleum, and almost any kind of hard flooring. What is perfect about … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Bathtub

Nothing can be more backbreaking than cleaning a bathtub, especially if you have let it go too long and want to bring it back to a semi-clean state. Even if you won’t be able to your tub back to its original look, at the very least you can make drastic improvements. However it is important to know what material your bathtub is made of, since you can cause damage to it by using the wrong kind of products. Some of the newer tubs are made of acrylic. This has a plastic feel and look to it. You may even be … Continue reading

Cleaning Minus the Streaks

I love Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. They are convenient (minus the pain of getting out the first wipe), effective and relatively affordable. However, I would not recommend using them to wipe down bathroom mirrors, regardless of what is written on the container. According to the manufacturer: “Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes combine a thick, textured wipe with Clorox’s unique clear-drying formula, so you can you can use them to clean and disinfect shiny surfaces like mirrors, glass, and metal fixtures.” I don’t doubt that the wipes clean and disinfect the items which they come in contact with (which is why I am a … Continue reading

Cleaning Countertops

Whereas I’d love to have a kitchen equipped with granite countertops, I am not sure I would be as carefree cooking as I am now. Granted, granite is one of the world’s most durable materials. It can sustain a lot of abuse and still look good in the process, but I have a feeling that I would go overboard try to maintain the material’s original look. I don’t want to be in a kitchen where I am constantly worrying about compromising the integrity of the countertops. Also, I hear that taking care of granite countertops requires relatively expensive cleaners to … Continue reading

Cleaning Schedules

Most people set aside one day a week to deep clean their home. When I was single I saved my big cleaning projects for Saturday morning. These days my schedule is less predictable, so I pencil in weekly cleanings on a day that I have the least amount of running around to do. I work well with lists, so when it came time to create a comprehensive cleaning schedule I grabbed a notebook and toured my home room by room to determine what tasks needed to be accomplished in each on a weekly basis. I divided my notebook pages into … Continue reading
