3 Types of Cleaning

My first housekeeping blog for the year was sort of a challenge; in conquering what I feel has become a lost art in today’s society.  The care of the home isn’t always considered to be so important.  But I believe it’s one of the ways we show love to our family. I also mentioned how housekeeping has evolved into what we typically refer to as homemaking.  I suspect that some think of the word “housekeeping” in a negative light. No matter what you call it, my goal is to help you understand the importance of it and what it all … Continue reading

Preparing for Spring Cleaning

I have to start my spring cleaning early around here. Between caring for young children at home and working at home around their schedules, it can take a while to get everything done. In addition, my plans for spending an entire weekend getting it out of the way usually butts up against all of the spring home improvement projects that my husband has on his list. And the coming of the nicer weather makes us all want to be outside to enjoy it. So, I’ve been sneaking up on spring cleaning this week by getting as much of my preparation … Continue reading

Frugal Spring Cleaning: Taking Advantage of Nature

It is Sunday evening and we are still settling in to our new home. It is a great house and property, but it needs a lot of TLC. There are big things to do and small things to do before this house will truly feel like home. One of the most immediate things to do here is some good old fashioned spring cleaning. The house, I am afraid looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for a very long time. Cleaning one single window pane required three whole paper towels to before they wouldn’t come up black, and that was for … Continue reading

General conference: Faith to Move Mountains

In his talk “Faith to Move Mountains” President Gordon B. Hinckley speaks about the faith of those in the church. He opens the talk by briefly speaking of his health and age. He says that as long as the Lord is willing to have him serve he will And when the time comes for new leadership the church will move forward in faith. President Hinckley goes on to say that the church was built on faith. He speaks about Joseph Smith and that it was faith that led him to pray in the grove, and translate the Book of Mormon. … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning as a Family—All at Once or Over Time?

I tend to be the sort of person who wants to jump in and get a project done all at once. That goes for spring cleaning too—I like to set aside a Saturday and just really get down to it—dredging closets, cleaning out cupboards, washing all the rugs and curtains, etc. BUT, I’ve learned over time that if it’s going to be a “family project”—I might have to adjust my own personal style and allow for not only a division of labor, but also a breaking up of the time. Working on family projects—assuming that spring cleaning IS a family … Continue reading

Greasy Messes and Expiration Dates

I spent Sunday spring cleaning the kitchen. For the most part, my kitchen is clean, or so I thought. There is always that tiny little space between the stove and the counter top where everything falls and the floor in there is a mess. The crumbs are easy but scrubbing up the greasy buildup in such a small area is really hard, I finally had to pull the stove out, then I found an even bigger mess. I was tempted to push it back! I used to use ammonia on grease, it worked like a charm with minimal scrubbing, but … Continue reading

How Does Your Home Feel

Spring cleaning is everyone’s favorite thing, right? Well, maybe not the cleaning itself but the end result is certainly one of my favorite things. There is nothing I like more than a clean house, I just wish I wasn’t the one who always had to do the cleaning. Our home is so much more than just the place we lay our heads at night, it is a reflection of who we are and how we live the rest of our lives. We all want a home that is peaceful, warm and brings us comfort. There are other things we want … Continue reading

Get Those Windows Sparkling

Nothing says spring cleaning like cleaning windows. It’s a big job and that’s why we only do it once a year but it does benefit you and your home. Clean windows make the whole house appear cleaner, they let in more sunlight and are a joy to look through. Also if you leave that grime on your windows they can become permanently etched and hazy. The ideal day to clean your windows is warm but a little overcast, if it’s too sunny your windows will dry to quickly and this can lead to streaking. Make sure you have everything you … Continue reading

Pinterest

I have a confession to make, I’m addicted to Pinterest. When I should be writing, or cleaning, or exercising or walking the dogs, I’m pinning instead. I decided to do a search for housekeeping and I can’t believe all the ideas I found! I’m always looking for new ways to organize but I would never have thought to use a paper towel holder to organize ribbons. Or clothes pins to keep track of embroidery thread. Decorating ideas abound as well. Ideas for each holiday and just general decorating ideas. Quick fixes for boring rooms are just a pin a way. … Continue reading

Germs, Germs Go Away

This winter is trying to kill me. I have been sick since November, since my flu shot to be exact. Now I’ve never been one of those people who won’t get the flu shot because they believe it makes them sick. I sign up gleefully every year, the truth is I’m healthy as a horse so a little vaccination can’t hurt. Anyway, I digress, I think it’s the cold medicine. I’ve taken all the precautions, I use hand sanitizer, I wipe down everything on a regular basis but what I have keeps coming back. I think I might have to … Continue reading
