More Ways to De-Grease

Whether it’s from butter, barbeque sauce or fried chicken, grease can wreck havoc on clothing, upholstery, and other materials. In my last post I addressed the importance of tackling a grease stain as soon as possible to lessen the chances of it permanently damaging fabric. In addition to pretreating the grease with laundry detergent, there are other ways to reduce its harsh affect on your favorite materials: Dishwashing Soap: Liquid dishwashing soaps, such as Dawn are excellent in the fight against grease stains. The soaps are specially formulated with grease fighting ingredients that emulsify grease bonds, so that water can … Continue reading

Getting Rid of Grease Stains

Nothing spoils Sunday brunch faster than having a pound of butter fall onto your lap. Okay, it wasn’t an entire pound of butter, but last week my 6-year-old accidently dumped two mounds of butter that were carefully placed on her Perkins’ pancakes onto my new khakis. Fortunately, getting the half-melted greasy butter blobs off my pants wasn’t too hard. As with any stain, the best line of defense is quick thinking. The faster you can treat the stain the better the chance you have of returning your garments to their original stain-free appearance. In my case I blotted off the … Continue reading

Fighting Pet Stains with Pee-Pee

I am the owner of two adorable Miniature Schnauzers with poor home training. I guess it’s my fault for not doing a better job, but technically the dogs belong to my son and husband, so I can say it’s their fault! Anyway I came home from vacation to a couple of horrible stains. It seems the dogs got out of the kennel when the pet sitter was not here and make a horrible mess in the dining room. Yes, they had a bad bowel movement in the dining room. They also marked a few of my dining chairs leaving some … Continue reading

Alternative Cleaners

Glass is a prime example of a material that can be cleaned with everyday household items. Add a half-cup of vinegar to one gallon of water and you can disinfect an entire wall of windows. For a deeper clean, add a half-cup … Continue reading

All About OxiClean

My mom is a diehard OxiClean fan. I thought about her while watching the Discovery Channel’s documentary series “PitchMen,” which features OxiClean’s former spokesman Billy Mays. Mays, who was born William Darrell Mays, Jr. in 1958, died last year after serving as the face of OxiClean and Orange Glo for years. Mays’ hyper personality helped sell a ton of OxiClean, and while his impassioned sales pitch may have generated a lot of attention to the cleaning product, its ability to erase stains on its own is what keeps it a bestseller. From organic stains, such as ketchup, ink and mud … Continue reading
