And while you are out there you might consider sprucing up your home’s exterior. Spring cleaning lists should include chores that need to done to the outside of your home as well as the inside. Just remember to start at the top of your house and work your way … Continue reading

A Clean Grill for Christmas

My best friend in Hawaii is cooking Christmas dinner for more than two-dozen guests. Fortunately, she’s getting help with the entrees from her husband who will be grilling a variety of different meats to feed the holiday crowd. However, since one grill is not enough to cook up all the menu items, she had to borrow another grill from her cousin. Unfortunately, that grill is caked with rust. After hearing about her pathetic tale I emailed her a list of solutions to her rust problems, including: Wire brush: A heavy-duty wire brush is the best tool to remove rust from … Continue reading

Grill Cleaning Tips

My neighbor has decided to grill his turkey this Thanksgiving. What a bonus for his wife. She’ll have the freedom to cook as many side dishes as she pleases in their oven while Tom the Bird gets grilled outside. Apparently, there are legions of grill fanatics who don’t bother to pack away their cook tops when the temperatures drop. If you are one of these diehards, then it’s important to keep your grill as clean as possible. I’m not a huge fan of the fancy schmancy, as seen on TV grill cleaning tools, such as the Grill Daddy Cleaning Tool; … Continue reading

Cleaning Wipes

A few years ago I conducted a TV news interview with a city health official on the proper precautions to take when grilling outdoors. She had great tips on how to keep fresh veggies from being contaminated by raw chicken juice and how long meat should stay on the fire before one worries about carcinogens. She also raved about her favorite cleaning shortcut–Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. The popular disinfecting wipes, which are packaged in a convenient pull-out container, is one of my favorite cleaning products as well. The health official went on and on about how the sanitary wipes were ideal … Continue reading

Grilling with Wood Planks

It may be fall, but if the weather’s nice it’s still grilling season in my book. Speaking of…the other day I was in the Fresh Market getting some fish to grill for Wayne and myself for dinner. They had a stack of smaller wood grilling planks on the counter. I’ve seen the longer ones and had considered trying them, but I figured I’d only use them with fish and that poses a problem. Wayne prefers salmon and I can’t eat it anymore. (I used to be able to, but about 10 years ago I developed an intolerance and now I … Continue reading

High Tech Grilling Gadgets

It would seem. . .unethical. . .if I didn’t write about grilling so close to Memorial Day. However, you must know that I am jealous of all of you who will be enjoying your grills this weekend and that I simply consider it cruel irony that I must write about grilling without actually having a grill. I may go borrow one from one of my friends. With that disclaiming blurb out in the open I present you today with a list of latest high tech grilling gadgets. I’m sure someone with more outdoor cooking experience will laugh at my next … Continue reading

Tips For Winterizing Your Backyard

Don’t let the title of this blog depress you. I don’t know where you live, but I reside in the Upper Midwest and for the last two days it has been storming and in the 50’s. So much for Indian summer. (Actually, it is supposed to be back in the 70’s by the end of the week.) Needless to say, today’s weather has me thinking about switching the house from summer to winter mode. Well, at least the backyard. I can’t help but cringe at the sight of the grill, lawn furniture, and plastic pool and think that in a … Continue reading

Entertaining Fun

I am not the world’s best housekeeper. I will win no awards for my cooking. However, my home is a warm inviting place and I love to entertain. I think what keeps people coming back is that I always come up with something different for an appetizer or dessert, depending on the occasion. I had a barbeque on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day. My father was killed in Vietnam so I want to honor him every day but do something special for holidays. We had so much food and amazingly, this time we had very few leftovers. I think I … Continue reading
