Balancing the Holidays: Simplify, Blend and Schedule

I don’t know about you, but December tends to be the busiest month of the year.  There is so much to do, so many preparations to make, gifts to buy and a house to clean. Yet this is also the time of year for being with family.  So how can you balance it all?  I think it comes down to three things:  simplifying, blending and scheduling. Let me explain.  First, simplify.  What are some things you can skip doing?  Are there areas of the home that really don’t need to be cleaned? Could you cut down on the amount of … Continue reading

Entertaining Fun

I am not the world’s best housekeeper. I will win no awards for my cooking. However, my home is a warm inviting place and I love to entertain. I think what keeps people coming back is that I always come up with something different for an appetizer or dessert, depending on the occasion. I had a barbeque on Monday to celebrate Memorial Day. My father was killed in Vietnam so I want to honor him every day but do something special for holidays. We had so much food and amazingly, this time we had very few leftovers. I think I … Continue reading

Fun and Festive New Year’s Layouts

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it can also translate into a room full of belly laughs if displayed just right. If you are looking to create a unique New Year’s layout for your holiday scrapbook, focus on the funny. For example, if your family members and friends tend to get a bit wild and wacky ringing in the New Year, be sure you capture the craziness with your camera. Then, continue snapping shots the morning after. By recording the recovery process in a series of photos, you will have ample material to craft an amusing scrapbook … Continue reading

Holiday Clutter

Is your house cleaner during the holidays or messier? I try to keep mine clean, you never know when someone will stop by but it quickly falls apart. I get quickly overwhelmed by clutter. When I feel like the house is cluttered I lose my motivation to clean. Right now, the house feels majorly cluttered. There are three Christmas trees, enough pine garlands to wrap the whole house plus pine cones and Christmas pictures and decorations everywhere. Not to mention that every inch of closet space and all the floor space in my craft room is littered with Christmas gifts, … Continue reading

Cleaning an Artificial Christmas Tree

Do you have a real tree or an artificial one? Growing up we always had real trees. Mom and Dad would put the tree up Christmas Eve after we were in bed and take it down New Years Day. Christmas morning really did seem magical because when we went to bed on Christmas Eve we just had a normal house and when we woke up in the morning it had been transformed. I loved it. I always wanted real trees for Christmas and in Maryland we always had real trees. Then we moved to Utah. It’s so dry here that … Continue reading

Stress-Free Preparations for the Holidays

With it already being November, you are probably starting to think about preparing your home for the upcoming holidays. My family gets a break from Thanksgiving, in that we always have it at a relative’s house. But we do host Christmas, so I am starting to think about those preparations in advance. Here is the thing about holidays and having friends and family over…we tend to get too wrapped up in the little stuff. How many people do you know (or perhaps you are one of them) that will spend hours and hours cleaning or scrubbing areas that your family … Continue reading

Forget Spring Cleaning, Try Fall Cleaning

Forget spring cleaning…I am not a fan of it. I prefer to do my “spring” cleaning in the fall. I have two reasons for this. The first is that I figure with having windows open throughout the warmer months, I have collected enough dust or whatever else may come in, that it needs a thorough cleaning. The second reason I prefer “fall cleaning” is because if I am going to be stuck inside my house for the next several months, I want it to be as clean as possible. Plus, it helps me prepare our home for the upcoming, busy … Continue reading

Fun Christmas Bling

Who can resist a bit of bling around the holidays? I am not a flashy person, but when I saw Martha Stewart’s latest Christmas creation I stopped dead in my tracks. I actually turned off my vacuum and turned all of my attention to the TV where a tree bedazzled with dozens of shiny beaded ornaments and garland stood like a beacon of beaded glory. There’s no way I have the time, talent or budget to recreate Martha’s beaded masterpieces; however, I did some research online and found a few cheaper and affordable alternatives that can be made by people … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Holiday Best

The holidays mean decking your halls and your body with your seasonal best. For guys and gals that often translates into wearing silk. While the luxurious material makes for elegant evening wear, silk can also be a pain to clean when it gets soiled or stained. Fortunately, there are ways you can preserve the look of your holiday best by following a few simple tips: Time: Timing is critical when it comes to cleaning silk. If you notice a spill on your silk tie or shirt, don’t wait until you get home to treat it. Immediately blot at the stain … Continue reading

Have Fun with Holiday Cleaning

Thanksgiving guests are gone, but the beginning of December ushers in a new round of house cleaning chores, especially if you are hosting Christmas at your chalet. While most homeowners dread the drudgery of getting their house in order for additional guests, cleaning can be fun if you incorporate the following suggestions: Rock Out: Turn up the volume on your favorite music and get cleaning. Or, put on some classical or Christmas music and sway in time to the beat as you dust, mop or scrub sinks. Feel the Burn: Instead of looking at house cleaning as a chore, look … Continue reading
