Who Does Most of the Housework

Do you do the majority of the housework in your home? A recent study has reinforced what we all already know, women, including working mothers, do the majority of housework, cooking and childcare. Why are people surprised by this? Since the dawn of time women have been responsible for the majority of housework. The division seems to be, women take care of the inside of the house and men take care of the outside. As we raise our children we reinforce those roles. Little girls help fold the laundry and run the vacuum. Little boys help mow the lawn, fix … Continue reading

I Love To Weed, I May Need Professional Help

Sometimes people write blogs that inspire you to think about things. Recently Stephanie Romero wrote about Chores That Relax You. I could relate with the fact that she doesn’t find painting relaxing. I don’t either. I get all excited to paint but by the time I’m finished wrestling with all that blue paint, I’m done. It drives me crazy and no matter how careful I am I get paint on the ceiling, trim and carpet. Not relaxing at all. For me, it’s weeding. Although you couldn’t tell it by the state of my flower beds right now, weeding relaxes me. … Continue reading

Housework and Home Business

My colleague, Sara Berthiaume, recently wrote a post called, Keeping House While Working from Home. She touches on an issue that many work at home moms are faced with. How in the world can you keep your home clean while building a business from home? Keeping a home is a big job. Don’t be fooled by those who want you to believe if you keep a home and raise a family you are not doing enough. Believe me, you are doing plenty! Caring for a home and a family can be overwhelming so when you add to it a home … Continue reading

Let Your Toddler Help With The Chores

Toddlers love to be involved in pretty much anything that their parents do. They even seem to enjoy things that older children do not seem to like very much. Things like doing dishes, laundry, yard work, and any number of other chores that you do in and around your home are surprisingly appealing to toddlers. Now is a good time to get your little one involved in lending a helping hand around the house. Giving your toddler opportunities to “do” household chores alongside you in an age appropriate way teaches responsibility and helpfulness. Many toddlers are naturally helpful by nature … Continue reading

Help With Housework

The makers of Scrubbing Bubbles have released the results from their second annual Dirty Work Index. They surveyed 2000 men and women and found that women still do most of the housework and as much as we may complain about that, it doesn’t seem that we are ready to give up the housecleaning limelight. Most women say they want more help around the house but they are not confident that their husbands can clean to their standards so they just do it themselves. Men feel they are helping more around the house but are not getting credit for it, and … Continue reading

Deciding Who Is Responsible for Housework

Who is mainly responsible for the housekeeping in your home? In several blogs, I have mentioned the importance of delegating housework. Anyone who lives in a home should play some part in keeping it clean and orderly. However this doesn’t necessarily mean that the delegation of housework will be even. You also have to figure in each person’s age, outside responsibilities and other important factors that may play into it. For instance when my children were young, I was a stay-at-home mom. Since I was in the home more hours a day than my husband, I pretty much took care … Continue reading

Don’t Let Housework Get In The Way Of Work

Have you ever been en route to your home office, only to be sidetracked by a pile of laundry that you just have to stop and fold? Maybe you were not sidetracked by the laundry. Perhaps you found yourself unable to walk by the kitchen sink without stopping to wash the three dishes that were neatly piled in there. Maybe it was neither of those two things, but something else entirely. A funny thing that happens when you work from home – you can hear the housework calling to you all day long. A desire to keep a tidy home … Continue reading

Tips for When You Are Overwhelmed with Housework

Yesterday, I posted about how the state of my house was so uncomfortable for me that I felt completely overwhelmed with housework. Whenever that happens, I try to approach things in a way that makes it all a bit more manageable. If you have ever found yourself in the same situation, you may benefit from the following tips. Figure out what bothers you the most and start with that. For me it tends to be a dirty kitchen and bathrooms, although some days I just can’t stand the toys on the floor. Pick one room to start with. Don’t leave … Continue reading

Help, I’m Feeling Overwhelmed with Housework

Most of the time my home is in company-ready condition. It is far from a showcase or spotless, but I can usually open the door to unexpected company without too much embarrassment and at worse, a dish or two in the sink, a couple of toys on the playroom floor, or some mail sitting neatly in the foyer. Today I can’t say that at all. There are toys strewn all over the living room, along with a shopping bag full of presents for a birthday party we are attending, two garbage bags full of boys clothes that were generously given … Continue reading
