It Is Time to Reinstate Some Routines Around Here

Today, I was thinking about how I am trying to find my way back to some form of regular daily and weekly routines. As I thought about that, I remembered how some of the routines that I had been using in the past helped me to get more work done than I am currently doing now. Of course, I’m not naïve enough to think that simply reinstating my favorite routines will restore my productivity to where it was before our new baby arrived. That said, I am optimistic that our days may run more smoothly and I could get more … Continue reading

Cleaning Supplies as a Gift Idea

Do you know someone who is moving into a new home? Perhaps it is your child’s first apartment. Or you know of a couple who is getting married and will be starting off fresh. It might not sound like the greatest gift idea but putting together a housekeeping basket might be just what they need. Think about what it’s like to start off with nothing. You have dishes to buy, linens and the list goes on. So what are some basic cleaning supplies that can be assembled into a basket? Here are some ideas. Dusting Supplies – microfiber cloths (my … Continue reading

Chemical Laden Cleaners- I Miss You

I have a confession to make… I miss unhealthy, non green cleaning. I really do. Today I found myself in the cleanser aisle at the grocery store coveting all those wonderful, good smelling products. That nifty little disposable toilet wand, I want to try it, it looks like so much fun and the picture on the package shows a sparkling toilet. Wait, a disposable toilet brush? More junk for the land fill. All those lovely cleaning products calling to me with their pretty labels and intoxicating scents. I want my house to smell like a pine forest after I scrub … Continue reading

Newlywed Gift

Do you know a newly married couple just setting up housekeeping? Still looking for the perfect gift? How about a cleaning basket? The new couple will get plenty of towels, coasters, sheets, glasses and toasters so give them something they will really use. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, cleaning supplies seemed so expensive and no matter what I bought I still needed more, not to mention I needed it most when I could afford it least. It’s not a very romantic gift but it is one they will use, over and over again. You can make … Continue reading

Creating an Inviting Dinner Table

A few years ago I attended a class at my church on homemaking. I remember the woman who taught shared some ideas on how to make your dinner table more inviting. At the time I had small children, thinking more about how I was going to keep the food on the table rather than on the floor or in the dog’s mouths…let alone worry about decorating the table. Now that my children are older, those ideas have been creeping up in my mind. And I would like to try implementing some of them. But first we have to deal with … Continue reading

My Favorite Household Cleaning Product: Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser

If I had to pick my absolute most favorite housecleaning product, do you know what it would be? It would be Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. I especially like the kind that is scented with Febreze. One of the first times I remember using this product was when I was a preschool teacher. I had to clean off the tables that were caked with dried paint and crayon marks. The spray we used wasn’t doing the job. Then someone suggested Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. It took hardly any effort to wipe those tables completely clean. I use this product for a … Continue reading

Cleaning the Bathroom Sink

In this blog we are moving onto the bathroom, probably one of the least favorite places to clean for most anyone. This is definitely one room that you should keep up with on a daily basis. It will not only keep it cleaner but it will be more sanitary. The sink can become one disgusting mess, especially if you have members of the family that don’t clean up after themselves. There is nothing more revolting to me than going to brush my teeth and seeing clumps of dried toothpaste or mustache hair in the sink. So this is an area … Continue reading

Clean Kitchen Sinks

We have been tackling the kitchen, focusing on appliances but today I want to talk about the sink. Now to some this may not be a big deal but to others (myself included), I just cannot handle having a dirty sink. I can’t stand seeing food or grease caked on or splattered all over my sinks. I find it very unappealing. Keeping my sinks clean on a daily basis is just one of those things that are important to me. And it can be done with very little effort and time. Several years ago I was introduced to “FlyLady,” an … Continue reading

Salvaging Stained Silk

My favorite boutique has an eye-catching display in the front window. The mannequins are dressed in spring-themed silk ensembles. I love the way the colorful silk blouses look paired with the neutral colored skirts and slacks, but I haven’t worn silk since giving birth and wonder if it’s worth investing in given that my six-year-old is the spill queen around here. My mother thinks I am being ridiculous given how easy it is to rid stains from silk. She even gave me a list of all the commercial stain removers that are readily available online and in stores. Still, I … Continue reading

Removing Super Stubborn Stains

As a mom of a very craftaholic little girl who has used walls, carpet and clothing as her canvases in the past, I know a thing or two about stain removal. In fact, I consider myself a stain removal expert. My top commercial stain removal products (in no particular order) are: Orange Miracle Biz Stain Activated Booster Goo-Gone OxiClean Carbona Stain Devil Simple Green I’m sure there are a number of other excellent commercial stain removers on the market, but I tend to stick with ones that I have had good experiences with, and the aforementioned products have served me … Continue reading
