Something To Think About

Almost as interesting as the array of home – based businesses out there are the stories behind them. Each business, even the home – based opportunities like Amway and Mary Kay that people buy into as a turnkey operation, was started by someone. Lately, I have been doing some thinking about this and I realized that I know far more home – based professionals than I thought. In my own home, there are two of us. Me with my freelance writing business and tiny little private law practice and my husband with an independent venture of his own as well … Continue reading

Michael Savage Thinks Epilepsy Medication Affects Cognition

Michael Savage is a radio personality who has been known to make some controversial statements. Recently, he said that epilepsy medication causes “cognitive problems”. This is not true. His misinformation might make people assume that children, and adults, who have epilepsy also have a cognitive disability. Michael Savage is a conservative American radio host. His show is called “The Michael Savage Show”, and I think it may have also been called “The Savage Nation”. I’m not entirely sure because I rarely listen to the radio anymore. However, I know that Michael Savage is someone who has gained quite a bit … Continue reading

In the Blink of an Eye

Tonight as I was getting Logan ready for bed he asked if he could see the video of him in my tummy. As I sat watching that little boy wriggling around in my belly I couldn’t help but feel a little sad. Where has the time gone? That precious little baby is turning four this month! How did this happen? He is growing up so fast; I just want to savor every second. So often as single parents we get caught up in the never-ending list of things to do, that we forget to lay the stress aside and just … Continue reading

Sinkhole Causes Problems for Historic Cemetery

A historic graveyard in Pennsylvania is being threatened by a large sinkhole. There is the possibility that the graves will need to be exhumed. If so, then this could make it difficult for genealogists to record the information on the graves, and to connect it to where they have been relocated. In Allentown, Pennsylvania, a large sinkhole has formed. It is around 50 feet long, and 30 feet wide, and it appears to be growing. As you may expect, the sinkhole is causing the town lots of problems. A dozen homes have been vacated, and 25 people have been evacuated. … Continue reading

Has School Security Gone Too Far?

It’s the stuff urban legends are made of: A 10-year-old boy from Tennessee is bored out of his mind while eating lunch at his elementary school cafeteria, so he decides to chew off pieces of his pizza to resemble a gun. He then proceeds to wave the slice of pie around like it’s the real deal, and ends up getting being banished to the “silent table” for the rest of the semester. Sound absurd? Perhaps, but it’s also 100 percent true. According to news reports, Nicholas Taylor will be dining in silence for allegedly using his teeth to form a … Continue reading

Black Thursday? Have Stores Gone Too Far?

This year, many stores are planning to open their doors late in the day on Thanksgiving in an attempt to lure Black Friday shoppers and their hard earned money into their stores. This move by retailers seems to have sparked a bit of an outrage among consumers and also among the employees of those stores. I love Black Friday and my husband and I have shopped on Black Friday every year for the past three years after we discovered how good the deals were. That said, I must agree with the employees and consumers that feel that starting sales on … Continue reading

What Happens to Your Research After You are Gone?

Genealogists put a great deal of effort into their genealogy research. Often it is a “labor of love”. Those two concepts, combined, make your all those notes, records, documents, photos, and family trees templates extremely precious. What will happen to it all after you pass away? Genealogy research tend to make people very aware of death. Genealogists search for death records, obituaries, wills and gravestones. I cannot think of any other hobbies that include what could be thought of as a “morbid fascination”. However, genealogists are only human. No matter how comfortable you might be visiting a cemetery, or reading … Continue reading

Study Links Early Exposure to Anesthesia With Learning Problems

A study done by researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, found that kids who received anesthesia before the age of two are at an increased risk for learning disabilities. The FDA, however, feels that there might be other factors influencing this result. A new study was led by Randall Flick, MD, at the Mayo Clinic. The researchers found that kids who had surgery that required the use of anesthesia before the age of two were twice as likely to end up with learning disabilities, (when compared to children who did not have anesthesia before they turned two years … Continue reading

Gone in a Flash

Do you ever look at your child and marvel at their innocence? Do you wonder how fast the time has gone since they were babies? I do all the time. I think it’s a natural part of parenting. Yet, we often want them to grow up. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought, “Oh I can’t wait until he can walk” or “I can’t wait until she is school” or “I can’t wait until they can fix their own lunch” I say these things all. the. time. We love our kids, but raising little ones is hard. It’s time … Continue reading

Marines Gone Wild

Have you been invited to a Marine Corps Ball lately? If not, chances are you aren’t quite famous enough. I am kidding, of course. Since becoming a Marine wife, I have attended several balls, held each November to honor the founding date of the Marine Corps. Think of it as a prom for Marines on their company’s birthday. It is a big deal – everyone dresses up, then eats and dances after a ceremony to honor all Marines past and present. The only ball I’ve been to that had anyone even remotely famous was one we attended out in San … Continue reading
