Spring Outdoor Fun

Even if you don’t live near a National Park and can’t take advantage of the free admission this week, don’t let that stop you from soaking up the gorgeous spring weather. Now that warmer days are here there’s no excuse for you to stay cooped up inside. Grab the kids, ditch the winter gear and get moving in the great outdoors. Children especially love exploring nature; however, too much too soon can be a recipe for disaster. While you may be itching to trek the entire afternoon away, if your children are young and not used to hiking, don’t force … Continue reading

Itching For Spring

We have had such a mild winter that I’m already in spring cleaning mode. The fact that my daughter is getting married in May and we are having a bridal shower at my house in April may have something to do with it. Because I’m a procrastinator I spent some time on the internet looking for the fastest and easiest ways to deep clean my house. There were no magic tricks available but there was lots of advice. The first thing I read is when you set out to do a deep clean, make sure that is what you are … Continue reading

Think Spring

It’s hard to think about spring when your yard is buried under a foot of snow. I can’t wait for winter to end. I’m over scrapbooking snow, bare branches, Christmas trees and other winter-themed items. I’m itching to get working on spring layouts. One of my favorite spring activities is picnicking. My family loves eating outdoors and I often document our meals with my digital camera and incorporate the shots in bright and cheery layouts, such as: Ant Theme: Weird, right? Not so fast. The page was inspired by adorable ant-shaped stickers and die cuts I found on sale at … Continue reading

Springtime Fun in the Great Outdoors

After two days of near 70-degree temps, reality hit, and our sleepy Wisconsin city got slammed with six inches of snow last week. Fortunately, the snow only stuck around for a couple days. Unfortunately, we got dumped on during my young daughter’s spring break from school. Despite the crazy weather pattern (a.k.a. spring in Wisconsin), we managed to salvage spring break with a few outdoor adventures that got my daughter itching for summer vacation. Spring has sprung in most states, and if you are looking for ways to take advantage of the seasonal temps with your kids, then consider the … Continue reading

Spring Fever: Moose’s Version

My shepherd mix Moose is handling the change of seasons very differently from my boxer mix Lally. Lally welcomed spring with an allergy attack of massive proportions. She’s been to the vet three times, taken steroids, antihistamines, and antibiotics (plus three different kinds of skin cream) to clear things up and is FINALLY getting back to normal. For Moose, spring has been more of an emotional change. Moose isn’t the most active dog out there. My roommates and I sometimes call him “Speed Bumpy” because he’s often found sprawled and snoring. He is a dog of comfort. But the warmer … Continue reading

The Advantages of a Spring Yard Sale

Yard sale, garage sale, porch sale, whatever you call it, having a sale of your not needed stuff is a great way to clear the clutter and to earn some money. While most people wait until the summer is in full speed, I am here to tell you that now is probably the best time to have your yard sale, if you want to get rid of the most stuff and get the most profit. After a long winter indoors, people are starting to emerge into the outdoors. They may be looking for something to do as they drive around … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning Time

Today it is chilly again, although I am afraid that I am already considering it to be spring. You see, we had two days this past weekend in which the temperatures “soared” into the early 70s. The snowdrops are already blooming in the yard, we had our first trip to the playground, and the town has already sent out its flyer about the annual Daffodil Days event. So, even though I am sitting her with cold hands listening to our baseboard heating system click and clack, I know in my heart that it is time to do the spring cleaning. … Continue reading

It’s Itching Season Again!

Ah spring. I go through this every year with Moose (my German shepherd mix) and Lally (my boxer/shar-pei mix). Moose starts to gnaw on his forearms. He ends up chewing calluses and bald spots into his legs if I don’t catch it quickly enough. Lally just itches all over. She crams her feet into her mouth to chew. She scratches her stomach until it’s red and irritated. And with the extremely mild weather we’ve been having in the Portland, Oregon area lately — we’ve been in the fifties all week — it seems that the itchies are arriving earlier than … Continue reading

Prevent Pitching Injuries

Baseball season is on the horizon. Every year, it seems like more and more young pitchers end up with serious injuries to their arms — like torn rotator cuffs. So how do you protect your baseball star? A study from Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas found that something as simple as playing catch during the off season can cut down on the risk of pitching-related shoulder injuries. David Lintner, the head team physician for the Houston Astros was involved with the study. Lintner pointed out that many high school athletes play multiple sports. They often go from a fall sport … Continue reading
