More Garage Tips

This garage of mine has become an eyesore, once again. It’s time to get some organization that works for me. A big space hog in most garages are things that go outside. Bikes, golf clubs, skateboards and sports equipment. We all know the garage is where these things live but usually they are behind or under something else so getting them out creates a bigger mess. One of the first things I need to do is designate a spot, near the garage door, for the outside stuff to do. I need to hang as much as I can to get … Continue reading

My Garage is a Hazard

If your garage is anything like mine, it’s where everything goes to die. If I don’t know where to put it, I’ll put it in the garage, “for now.” Yeah, around here for now can last any way from a day until they cart me off to the nursing home. The bad thing about garages is that we store all the dangerous stuff out there. All the chemicals we don’t want to store in the house and all the sharp tools, they are all in the garage. I’ve spent so much time organizing my garage but unfortunately, I don’t manage … Continue reading

Freeing Yourself From Clutter

I am not a hoarder although at times I do have way too much fabric. I don’t like the look of clutter or how it makes my house feel. I don’t understand hoarders, and there are many benefits of not being surrounded by clutter. People who help others declutter for a living say that clutter creates stress because the human mind is not meant to deal with so much constant stimulation. When you clear out the clutter it’s almost like a sigh of relief. It visually opens up the space and makes it restful to look at instead of stressful. … Continue reading

How to Make Your Basement Safe from Fire

Basements can be scary things, and I am not just talking about the pretend monsters that kids imagine being down there. In fact, recent estimates state that there are almost 17,000 basement fires each year. Basement fires can be particularly worrisome, since they usually have limited ways to get out of them, making escape in an emergency difficult and sometimes tragic. With the economy and home prices being what they are, we are also using our basements more fully now, turning them into livable space, rather than upgrading to larger homes. Home theaters, man-caves, workshops, game rooms, play rooms, bars … Continue reading

Fire Safety At Home

How safe is your home? Do you really take fire prevention seriously or do you think it couldn’t’ happen to you? My grandfather was a fireman so I know firsthand how very real house fires are and how easy it is to prevent one and be prepared should one happen. *Change your smoke detector batteries twice a year. I use daylight savings as my reminder but you could use any two dates that you will remember, set up a reminder on your calendar. *Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen and the garage. Replace every few … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning Time

Today it is chilly again, although I am afraid that I am already considering it to be spring. You see, we had two days this past weekend in which the temperatures “soared” into the early 70s. The snowdrops are already blooming in the yard, we had our first trip to the playground, and the town has already sent out its flyer about the annual Daffodil Days event. So, even though I am sitting her with cold hands listening to our baseboard heating system click and clack, I know in my heart that it is time to do the spring cleaning. … Continue reading

Put a fork in me….

I’m done. I threw in the towel. Elvis left the building and the fat lady has sung. I quit. I never thought I would utter those words (or type them for that matter). While I am not proud of being a quitter…it just feels right this time. Allow me to rewind a few months. I used to be a direct sales Director with a large downline team. Each month my paycheck and my business continued to grow. Much like Andre Agassiz and Michael Jordan, I quit in my prime – only I left for a very different reason. It was … Continue reading

Winter Driving—Are You Ready?

Ready or not, it’s winter (Mother Nature made that clear in no uncertain terms a few days ago). Much of the nation got walloped by a wintry mess, including right here in my neck of the woods, where parts of our state got up to 20 inches of snow. Luckily, I avoided having to drive in the treacherous conditions (I rolled into my garage just as the snow started to fall). However, others were not as fortunate. According to news reports, the wintry conditions were to blame for at least seven traffic deaths as it moved from Texas to Connecticut. … Continue reading

Top 10 Hotel Safety Tips

Welcome to August. I know–we are almost a week into the month, but better late than never, right? If August is the month that you planned to take your big summer vacation then congratulations—you made it. As a child my favorite part of going on vacation was getting to stay at a hotel… and, why not? The hotel had a pool, an elevator, a restaurant, and if we were lucky our room would be on one of the top floors with allowed us great views of the city below. Of course, back then I didn’t consider that there could be … Continue reading
