Organizing Your Clothes Closet

In general, closets are not my specialty around here. In fact, almost all of them are cluttered and disorganized…or they are at leastheading in that direction. But for whatever reason, the one closet I have always managed to keep together is my clothes closet. You might think I have some great ideas or you might think I’m a little over the top…you be the judge. First, it helps to have a large closet. If you don’t, then utilize your space well. Since the weather is cooler, it’s probably time to pack away the summer clothes. This will leave more room … Continue reading

Organizing Your Closets

Some areas of the home are easier to ignore when it comes to a mess. Take for instance closets. You know the old saying, “Out of sight, out of mind.” I recently decided to tackle the most disorganized and messy closet in my home, the linen closet. Here are the steps I took which I plan to do with my other closets. First, empty the entire closet. It is better to start with a clean slate. Otherwise you end up just moving things around. I made it a rule for myself that as I emptied things out, I wouldn’t decide … Continue reading

Organizing The Coat Closet

Yesterday I tackled my coat closet. It was time, and although the whole time I was dreaming of turning it into a craft closet, I stuck it out and now it’s nicely organized. The first thing I did was take everything out of it. I was amazed at what I found. Some of the things could be returned to their rightful places and some things went into a pile for the yard sale. I had no idea there were so many pairs of gloves in that closet. Yet, in the winter I can never find a pair. After the closet … Continue reading

Getting Your Home in Order After the Weekend

You can always tell that it is Monday at my house because of the visible chaos that is spread throughout the house, especially on the first floor. Toys, books, jackets, dishes, you name it, collects in odd places, as the family runs in and out of the house on various errands. Home projects, such as organizing a closet or de-cluttering books or toys don’t always get completed, since there is a yard sale or the farmer’s market or a softball game to go see instead. Sometimes when life gets in the way, it isn’t just the weekend that has caused … Continue reading

When Your Bedroom is an Eyesore

I don’t know if you are like me but I tend to spend more energy and effort into decorating the common areas of our home, like the kitchen and living room and less thought is put into my bedroom. But when it comes to keeping the home clean, you are more likely to put effort into those rooms you have spent time decorating. Rooms that are just kind of blah don’t give you as much motivation. So be sure to put some decorating touches in your bedroom, just to spruce things up and give you more drive to keep it … Continue reading

Organizing Your Front Hall Closet

Last month I blogged about tackling those unseen areas in our home, the ones that no one else but our family knows is a mess. My plan was to get to these areas one spot at a time. I also talked about writing down all of the areas that need work. At first I thought I would tackle our linen closet, since it is the biggest mess and one of the more commonly used areas in our home. But instead I decided to take a different approach. I am going room by room, starting with the front of our home, … Continue reading

Clean Out Your Cleaning Supplies

Part of housekeeping is making sure that your house is in order but if your cleaning supplies aren’t, then you just might be wasting space. Think of the number of products and tools you have bought over the years in order to make your job of cleaning easier or more efficient. Do you still use all of them? It’s a good idea to go through your cleaning supplies, products and tools to decide which ones are worth keeping. For instance, despite the fact that my house is 95% hardwood floors, I still keep a vacuum cleaner around. All that does … Continue reading

Organizing Those Hats and Mittens

I finally had it this weekend when it took swimming through a sea of winter wear just to get out of the door. Despite my best efforts to corral the chaos, there were hats, mittens, gloves and scarves everywhere in the front hall. I could probably have jumped off of the upstairs landing, executed a not-so-perfect swan dive and still not get hurt, thanks to the padding of a pile of soft, colorful acrylic. You know what leaves me shaking my head the most? The fact that even though there were all of those mittens and gloves all over the … Continue reading

Organizing the Family Room (1)

In my home the family room always seems to be the last town in Dodge. What I mean by that, and this is a secret confession, is that on weekends, I will sometimes banish the rest of the family to that room so I can do good cleaning of the rest of the house. And, no matter how often I pick up the house during the day, the family room is always in chaos by the end of the night. I am hoping that with a bit of organization, I can tame the room and make it easier to maintain. … Continue reading
