Put Away the Excuses

I have heard a lot of women who work outside the home say they don’t have time for housekeeping. In fact, just because I work at home, I have friends say it’s no wonder I can keep up with the house. I try not to take offense to that because the reality is that even though I work inside my home, I still work full-time hours. So it’s not like I really get all these extra hours that others don’t. To me, it’s really about prioritizing and keeping a schedule. I have always kept a maintained home (notice I am … Continue reading

Excuses For Not Exercising: #5 It Hurts

Using the muscles that you have not used for a while takes some getting used to. The muscles have pretty much been dormant and the stretching that you encounter when working out a new exercise program will cause some discomfort until the muscle has been worked on regularly. This is known as DOMS or delayed-onset muscle soreness. You are putting your muscle through a new range of movement. This occurs not only when trying a new exercise or just beginning to exercise, but also if you increase an exercise in repetitions. There could also be some muscle fiber tearing and … Continue reading

Excuses For Not Exercising: #4 It Is Not Doing Anything

Exercising the body to a point that you can be able to tell there is any difference takes some time. If you are just starting to exercise, be prepared. It does not happen overnight. It very well could take several weeks before you begin to see any difference. How you feel, however, is a totally different story. Once you start exercising you will start to feel more energetic, more fit and trimmer within a matter of a week. The big hurdle to climb over though is the hurdle known as dedication, patience, perseverance and commitment. You may want to quit … Continue reading

Finding Excuses to Hug

My kids are not so snuggly any more. We’ve moved through what I hope will be remembered as the snarkiest years of teenagehood and they can stand to be in the same room with me. But those snuggly, hugging days are pretty much long gone. Now I have to be a bit stealthier and pay attention to those rare opportunities when a hug is in order. Birthdays are good for at least one hug. Even a teenager is willing to entertain a big birthday hug from the annoying mother. As a matter of fact, any time a gift is given … Continue reading

Is Your Home Entertainment Ready?

So my husband and I have been trying to decide what to do about our oldest son’s high school graduation, which is less than a month away. The only reason we have procrastinated is because we had been hoping to hear a date on when he will leave for the Air Force. Our plans have been to combine his graduation party with his going away party. In fact, a couple of months ago our intentions were to work on areas of the home that we felt needed some sprucing up before having a big party. But as time kept passing … Continue reading

Setting Measurable Goals with Deadlines

When it comes to housekeeping, having no plan is what usually causes disarray, disorder and uncleanness. Too many of us rely on what we “hope” to get to, what we would “like” to accomplish. But this doesn’t really get us anywhere. I have talked in the past about this but I want to remind you that when it comes to setting goals, they have to be measurable. General goals such as, “I want a clean house” won’t work. You can’t really measure a clean house because your idea of clean and my idea of clean could be completely different. So … Continue reading

Housekeeping Then and Now

I was recently watching a show depicted in the times before we had electricity. It was interesting to think about how different housekeeping was back then. In order to get the most out of your day, you had to get up with the sun. That meant rising pretty early. And the work didn’t end until the sun went down. I was thinking about how even back then, women kept a schedule. They knew when their day would begin and when it would end. They scheduled their housekeeping according to the different seasons. But they also set aside certain tasks on … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less Series

I have decided to share some of my tips on how I keep my house clean, by spending just 30 minutes a day on it. Now of course, some of what I do may not work in your home. For instance, if you don’t have pets, that type of cleaning won’t apply. But hopefully what you learn from my schedule is that you really can keep a neat, orderly home and not spend a lot of time on it. Each day of the week I have certain tasks and chores that I do. Because I like to keep my weekends … Continue reading

The Manager of Your Home

In my last blog I kicked off a sort of series on housekeeping that I will be doing. I laid the foundation by providing a definition of what the word housekeeping means. One of the definitions was, “the management of a house and home affairs.” A manager’s job—in any facet—is to plan, coordinate and organize. Whether you are managing a multi-million dollar business or your home, these three components are vital. So as we are looking ahead to a New Year, this is your chance to develop a plan on how you will tackle your home. This will depend on … Continue reading

Making This a Stress-Less Christmas

We are just a few days away from Christmas. If you were to ask me if I feel ready, I would have to honestly say no. But at the same time, I’m not sweating it. Gift shopping-wise, I am fine. In fact, this is the easiest I have ever had it. No adults are exchanging and the only other children in the family are my nephews. But my sister and I agreed to not buy for each other’s kids this year. My children want money, so I don’t even have to pick their gifts out. So in this department, I … Continue reading
