When to Clean Showers

Cleaning a shower stall as soon as it is done being used is the best time to eliminate soap scum. In order to spare yourself from needless scouring, begin your cleaning regime while the hot steamy air from the shower is still evident. The steam helps loosen dirt and scum from shower floors and walls and allows you to wipe up grime much easier than if you were to tackle the job hours after the shower was turned off. When cleaning a shower stall, it’s best to start at the top and work your way down. If the steam is … Continue reading

Scour the Shower

It’s hard to believe that a place that you go to get clean can get so incredibly dirty. Personally, I hate cleaning the shower in the master bathroom. I don’t have a problem cleaning the tub, but shower stalls are a pain to scour. Unlike traditional tubs, you can’t fill a shower stall with water and cleaning supplies and scrub down the walls. The shape of a shower stall is also not very conducive to eliminating mold in mildew easily from corners, cracks and crevices. If you have textured shower floors, then cleaning can be even more of a chore. … Continue reading

The Baby Weight Battle Continues

There are few women I know that haven’t struggled with their body image at one time or another. As mothers I think we struggle even more. The media constantly bombards us with vain messages that make us feel inadequate if we don’t have a size 0 waist and a perfect figure. After having a baby, let’s face it, few of us fit the mold. As a single mother it gets even harder. Finding time to shower is a challenge most days, let alone finding the time to exercise. It is often shoved to the side as other priorities take its … Continue reading

Too Many Gifts

I love Christmas, I really do, but I can’t help but wonder how much longer it will be the holiday we all remember from childhood. Every year the stores bring out the decorations earlier and earlier. Christmas trees are up in the stores before the school supplies are even gone. Everything is advertised as that perfect gift for someone on your list. Have we forgotten what Christmas is about? All day long I hear people talking and read online about the shopping, shopping and more shopping. The amount of debt Americans take on every Christmas is staggering. I’m as guilty … Continue reading

Where to Look for Lace

In a previous post I provided tips on how to incorporate lace patterned scrapbook paper into a variety of layouts. If you are looking to give your page designs a vintage, delicate or feminine look, a little lace paper can go a long way. Fortunately, you don’t have to drive from store to store or scour the Internet for retailers that carry beautiful lace paper designs. Scrapbook.com offers a wide array of lace paper, in a rainbow of colors. Last year I found some incredible blue and purple lace detailed paper on the website, and used it to embellish a … Continue reading

Do We Need All Those Wonder Cleaners?

There are so many cleaners on the market, one for every job. What did we do before these fabulous companies came up with a product for everything? If you bought one of each product the manufacturers want to convince you that you must have in order to have a clean home, you would have a very full cleaning basket. The list goes on and on. For every stain there is a remover, every substance or surface, a special cleaner. I used to cringe every time I opened the cabinet under my sink; things were always falling out, getting spilled, making … Continue reading

Summer Fixes and Tips

Summertime comes with its own set of challenges, such as how to keep the sand out of the car or what to do when the kiddie pool is full of mold. Here are some quick summer fixes and tips to get through the season with ease. Sandy Bottom (and everywhere else) No matter how much you try to get all of the sand off before you get into the car, inevitably it seems that half of the beach gets in. Some beaches offer an outdoor shower, but not all. And some little ones want nothing to do with the shower, … Continue reading

Spice Up Your Cleaning Routine

Cleaning and Christmas seem to go hand in hand, at least if you ask the moms I chat with in the lobby of my daughter’s school in the minutes before the dismissal bell rings. You’ve never heard so much commiserating about collective cleaning routines, or lack thereof, or lack of time to implement thereof. A few of us joke about ways to multi-task while we dust, mop and fold laundry. One mom shared a great tip: she places all her long-distance calls to friends or family members while she does the laundry or dishes. By talking on a hands-free device … Continue reading

Master Bath Cleaning

When you have a house full of holiday guests do you allow them to use your master bathroom? I know some people who won’t let anyone use the bathroom connected to their master bedroom. They consider their master bath to be a private sanctuary and prefer their guests do their duty in the other bathrooms. If you don’t have a preference and welcome overnight guests to use your master bath, then you might consider conducting a deep-cleaning before the holidays hit. Start with your bathtub. If you have a jetted tub, clean it by filling it with hot water. Next, … Continue reading

Prepping Your Home for the Holidays

Tis the season to give your home a good cleaning, just in time for all those holiday guests who will be dropping in to partake in various festivities. Besides dusting, vacuuming and disinfecting bathrooms, bedrooms, the living area and the kitchen, pay special attention to the fireplace. When was the last time you cleaned your fireplace’s brick work? The task can be easily overlooked during the warm summer months when most entertaining takes place outdoors, but during the winter when the family regularly gathers around the fireplace, it’s a good idea to get the hearth in tip-top shape. For tough … Continue reading
