Snowing in Spring…Adjusting Our Frugal Plans

It is a few days past the official start of spring, and I am looking at a wintry wonderland just outside my window. The salt trucks and plows have been by, but they have to be diligent. Already the driveway and roads are covered with white. Despite about three inches of snow on the ground already and more to come, schools are not closed today. There is no excessive wind, and we are used to snow. The weather has been wrecking some havoc with our spring frugal plans. We can’t get started on our garden, and may lose out on … Continue reading

Supplies for Seasonal Cleaning

I kicked off 2013 with a determination to conquer what I call a lost art in society, housekeeping.  My way of defining housekeeping is cleaning, repairs, decorating and organizing. January’s focus is on cleaning, which I blogged about the three main types of cleaning:  seasonal, deep and maintenance.  Last week I introduced you to a seasonal cleaning plan and today we are going to talk about the supplies you need. As a reminder, seasonal cleaning targets those areas inside and outside the home that you are likely to get to once-a-year.  Examples include washing windows and cleaning out the garage. … Continue reading

Developing a Seasonal Cleaning Plan

Living in Wisconsin, I get to experience all of the seasons.  Of course, some last longer than others but I honestly wouldn’t give up the chance to sweat in summer, rake leaves in the fall, bundle up in the winter and observe new growth in the spring. One of the opportunities I take advantage of, because I get to experience these seasonal changes, is cleaning.  Now who thinks of cleaning as an opportunity, right? Seasonal cleaning allows you to concentrate on certain areas you don’t traditionally get to.  But you do it at a time that makes sense.  That is … Continue reading

More Garage Tips

This garage of mine has become an eyesore, once again. It’s time to get some organization that works for me. A big space hog in most garages are things that go outside. Bikes, golf clubs, skateboards and sports equipment. We all know the garage is where these things live but usually they are behind or under something else so getting them out creates a bigger mess. One of the first things I need to do is designate a spot, near the garage door, for the outside stuff to do. I need to hang as much as I can to get … Continue reading

Overhauling the Garage

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Watching TLC’s “Hoarders” makes me want to purge nearly everything from my home. And I don’t have a heck of a lot to begin with. Sorting clutter is part of many homeowners’ spring cleaning rituals, but when you have a mountain of “stuff” to sort; it’s not always easy to get the job done. This is especially true if you are planning to tackle the abyss of items in your garage. For most people the garage is the catch-all for everything that doesn’t fit inside the home. It doesn’t take much … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning: Rugs

I could have easily spent the day on my porch pounding a winter’s worth of dust and debris from my kitchen and bathroom rugs… if it weren’t for the fact that we were pummeled with more than 14 inches of snow last night. Oh, and did I mention the 38 mph winds? So much for spring, but what can you expect living in Wisconsin. Part of my spring cleaning ritual is deep cleaning all of the rugs I have placed around the house. Some homeowners swap out rugs at the end of each season. However, my decor is very simple, … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning: The Garage

In most families, garage cleaning is left up to the man of the house. Unless, of course, your last name is Kardashian or Jenner, then organizing the garage is a job for professionals. For the rest of us mere mortals, spring is a time when the entire home gets deep-cleaned from top to bottom, including the garage. While it may seem stereotypical to insist that your husband tackle the task, the fact is, if your significant other houses his collection of tools, sporting equipment and other boy’s toys in the garage, then you might need an extra hand to help … Continue reading

Countdown to Spring Cleaning

It’s hard to think about spring cleaning when it’s twelve degrees BELOW zero out, not counting the wind chill (add that and it feels like -35!!). Yet, I can’t help but feel the need to purge a mountain of household junk that has accumulated inside and outside of our abode. Truth be told, the exterior of the house needs more work than the interior. That fact is exacerbated as the white snow turns an ugly shade of grey and further blends into the dirt that has accumulated around the brick structure. I have a spring cleaning list that grows by … Continue reading

Spring Cleaning is a Family Affair

Well, my obsession with spring cleaning is finally being noticed by the rest of my family, especially my husband. I approached the subject yesterday and mentioned how this year I really needed the whole family to pull together to get it done. While I normally handle the bulk if not all of the spring cleaning myself, this year it has to be different. We’ve been in our new home for almost two years now. Much of the cleaning and repairing time has been ongoing since then. The first few months saw a flurry of cleaning, because the house had been … Continue reading
