Cleaning Minus the Streaks

I love Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. They are convenient (minus the pain of getting out the first wipe), effective and relatively affordable. However, I would not recommend using them to wipe down bathroom mirrors, regardless of what is written on the container. According to the manufacturer: “Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes combine a thick, textured wipe with Clorox’s unique clear-drying formula, so you can you can use them to clean and disinfect shiny surfaces like mirrors, glass, and metal fixtures.” I don’t doubt that the wipes clean and disinfect the items which they come in contact with (which is why I am a … Continue reading

Cleaning Schedules

Most people set aside one day a week to deep clean their home. When I was single I saved my big cleaning projects for Saturday morning. These days my schedule is less predictable, so I pencil in weekly cleanings on a day that I have the least amount of running around to do. I work well with lists, so when it came time to create a comprehensive cleaning schedule I grabbed a notebook and toured my home room by room to determine what tasks needed to be accomplished in each on a weekly basis. I divided my notebook pages into … Continue reading

Everyday Cleaning

Is it possible to skip daily cleaning routines? I suppose if you live alone there would be days you could pass on cleaning, but if you have a spouse or children, I don’t see how you could avoid cleaning at least a little each day, especially when it comes to dishes and laundry. There are many days when I wish that I could ditch the dishes or the laundry (OH!MY!WORD! the laundry!), but I don’t see how it would be possible to do so. After all, we only have so many forks and spoons… and pairs of underwear, so going … Continue reading

Time to Clean Out the Medicine Cabinet

It seems as though most of the people I know are dropping like flies to the flu or other respiratory illness right now. Whether it is the dreaded swine flu or the usual seasonal flu, the fact that everyone around us seems to be affected right now makes the whole thing hit home. I know, despite trying to deny it to myself, that at some point my own family may be affected. As much as I would like to sometimes place them in a bubble, there are those things called school and work, not to mention social activities. With this … Continue reading

Economy Hotels Getting Upgrades

Personally, as long as a hotel is not infested with roaches or bed bugs and is clean then I don’t have a problem staying in it. And with the recent news that bed bugs have been found in even the most luxurious 5-star properties it kind of makes you wonder what you’re doling out the extra cash for these days. If your risk for getting bit by bugs is the same in a room that cost $500 per night versus one that costs $50 per night, sign me up for the latter. And speaking of $50 hotel rooms, budget properties … Continue reading

Hotel Happenings: Dirty Rooms and the Dreaded Wake Up Call

Disgustingly gross hotel rooms have been a hot topic in the Travel Blog and I recently hit pay dirt when I came across a list of the nation’s filthiest properties. According to TripAdvisor’s annual list of dirty hotel rooms, Manhattan’s Hotel Carter is as vile as they come. The 700-room hotel, located on West 43rd Street near Times Square once again earned the No. 1 spot on TripAdvisor’s filthy list (it has held the dubious honor for the past two years). Now, for the third year in a row the Hotel Carter reigns supreme over its other groddy counterparts with … Continue reading

Lose Fat, Not Money at Hilton

Staying fit on the road can be challenging, especially if you are not a runner and don’t have the luxury of simply slipping on comfy shoes and heading outside to get in a decent workout. For many people, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is priceless and they are willing to spend a pretty penny in order to stick to their current exercise routine. However, that can be hard when you are traveling for business or pleasure. Tracking down a hotel with a gym can be a pain, not to mention costly. Fortunately, Hilton Hotels and Resorts is making it easier to … Continue reading

Chores Can Prepare for a Strong Work Ethic

Fellow blogger Michele Cheplic recently blogged about “Slave Labor.” Or should I say, kids doing chores. I had to chuckle when I read that her 7 year old daughter’s response to making her bed was, “What am I a slave?” Chores are probably one of the least favorite things that any kid likes to do. And for some kids it only gets worse as they get older. Yes, my teens have tried to get out of doing chores but never could I imagine them doing what an 11-year-old German boy apparently did, by calling the police on his mother. As … Continue reading

Creative Lodging

According to ABC News, hotel rooms in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are going for upwards of $500 per night in the days leading up to Super Bowl XLV. I cannot image dropping that much money on a space I would only be using to sleep and shower in. I couldn’t pay a fraction of that price for a hotel room, and I wouldn’t, given there are much cheaper alternatives, though maybe not so much in the city hosting the Super Bowl the night before the big game. Still, if you are looking to cut down on the cost of lodgings … Continue reading

Get Your Shower to Sparkle

With holiday guests using your home as a hotel, you will not only have to deep-clean before and after their arrival, but also you will likely have to spruce up during their stay as well. In addition to bigger messes in the kitchen, your bathrooms will be seeing a lot more action during the holidays. So how do you keep your showers clean when house guests are constantly scrubbing up? If your showers have sliding glass doors you will need to wipe out the tracks once the gang has finished showering. You don’t want water to sit in the door … Continue reading
