Picking Up the Night Before

Nothing can put a damper on your day quicker than waking up to a messy house. Well, at least that is true for me. When I find it impossible to pick up the night before and I wake up to what wasn’t done, it can quickly dictate my mood. Suddenly I am a little snappy and touchy. I get an overwhelming sense of dread about the day that is before me. While this might seem like commonsense, I would guess that not everyone has considered the idea of picking up at nighttime. But I guarantee you it can make a … Continue reading

The Joy of Tidying Up

Well housekeeping sure has been easier lately since the kids have returned to school. I never realized how much additional work I had while they were home during the summer. Now all I have to do is spend about 30 minutes in the morning tidying up and the house stays clean for most of the day. I love that phrase “tidying up.” It’s like the bow on the present, the final touch. When you tidy up and take a step back to look at things, you feel complete. Okay, maybe it’s just me. But tidying up is an important component … Continue reading

Speed Cleaning

Have you ever received that last minute call, “Guess who’s coming over for dinner tonight honey?”  Or you suddenly remembered that so-and-so was stopping by to go over notes for an upcoming meeting. Maybe you have family coming by but you got lost in a good book.  Suddenly you look at the clock and realize you have an hour before they arrive. All of these scenarios can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and unprepared.  But this is where speed cleaning comes in. Speed cleaning requires fast movement.  In fact, you need to set a timer so that you have a deadline … Continue reading

Deep Cleaning Your Home

There is a big difference between cleaning and “deep” cleaning. While regular cleaning can cut down on how often you need to deep clean and make the work easier, it is still necessary every-so-often. Deep cleaning means getting into areas you don’t normally touch. It is those unseen, oftentimes overlooked areas of the home. How often you need to deep clean will depend not only on your maintenance of that area but what it is used for. Some rooms or areas of the home may need a deep cleaning every few weeks. But some can wait a few months. It … Continue reading

Preventing Bedbugs

I have never had bedbugs, nor have I ever known someone personally who has had them (at least I don’t think so). But the recent news surrounding their infestations in homes and hotel rooms certainly has me concerned. I am thinking ahead to when my family will travel to Texas to witness our son’s graduation from the Air Force. We will need to spend several nights in a hotel and already I have the heebie-jeebies. I am happy to tell you that there is actually a bedbug registry in which you can check your hotel to see if there have … Continue reading

Daily Cleaning Routine

Do you have a daily cleaning routine? Whether you call it this or daily chores, it’s important to have something in place so that you can keep up. Some things must necessarily be done on a daily basis, such as washing dishes. Other things depend on your standards, the number of people in your family and the expectations. For instance, some of the things in my home that must be done daily include laundry, sweeping, dishes, wiping counters, surface cleaning of the bathroom, making beds and so on. Everyone’s daily list will look different. If you can set aside a … Continue reading

Cleaning in 30 Minutes or Less Series

I have decided to share some of my tips on how I keep my house clean, by spending just 30 minutes a day on it. Now of course, some of what I do may not work in your home. For instance, if you don’t have pets, that type of cleaning won’t apply. But hopefully what you learn from my schedule is that you really can keep a neat, orderly home and not spend a lot of time on it. Each day of the week I have certain tasks and chores that I do. Because I like to keep my weekends … Continue reading

Put Away the Excuses

I have heard a lot of women who work outside the home say they don’t have time for housekeeping. In fact, just because I work at home, I have friends say it’s no wonder I can keep up with the house. I try not to take offense to that because the reality is that even though I work inside my home, I still work full-time hours. So it’s not like I really get all these extra hours that others don’t. To me, it’s really about prioritizing and keeping a schedule. I have always kept a maintained home (notice I am … Continue reading

All You Need Is 15 Minutes a Day

One of my routines in the morning is to straighten up around the house. I’m a morning person, so I don’t mind. But if you aren’t a morning person, then you might want to wait until the end of the day. In fact, I’m actually starting to think that might be the better way to do it. It would be nice to wake up one morning and not have anything to straighten. But then again, by the time my three children are done getting ready for school, there are bound to be lights on, a mess somewhere, toothpaste left in … Continue reading

Are You Overscheduled?

Would you consider yourself to be someone who is overscheduled? So because of that, housework is the last thing on your mind? Some people don’t get enough sleep because of everything they have to accomplish in a day. That is a sign of being overscheduled. Do you drink several cups of coffee a day in order to keep you “alert”? It can actually contribute to having mood swings and cause other health problems. This is a sign of being overscheduled. Do you find it difficult to say no? To turn down opportunities to help someone or to get involved in … Continue reading
