I Love My Vacuum

I did it, again. I bought a new vacuum and I think I’m a little in love with this thing! First let me say that I will not pay $500 for a vacuum, I don’t care how well it works, I can’t justify spending that much on a vacuum. My wedding rings didn’t cost that much. I’m not cheap, I’m frugal. I did some research on the internet and of course the name Dyson was everywhere, but even more surprising, so was Hoover, at about a fifth of the price. The reviews were good so I went to Kohl’s. The … Continue reading

The Vacuum- My Nemesis

I may have mentioned a time or two that I really dislike vacuuming. I don’t know what it is but to me it’s the most pointless thing I do in my home. I know it ‘s not, I know vacuuming keeps the carpet clean and extends it’s life, but I don’t like it. Believe it or not I actually scrub my kitchen floor more often than I vacuum, and I do it on my hands and knees. There is no logic to my likes and dislikes. I kept telling myself it was the vacuum I disliked and not the actual … Continue reading

The Search for the Perfect Vacuum

My love affair with Dyson vacuums continues, despite the fact that I don’t own one. I’ve made it no secret that I’m desperately seeking a vacuum that sucks up everything in sight and doesn’t spit out the things it doesn’t like. A number of readers have been kind enough to recommend their favorite brands of non-Dyson vacuums and some have even got me re-thinking my unwavering loyalty to a brand I don’t even own. One reader suggested that I invest in a Rainbow vacuum because it uses a water filtration system and therefore the dirt that is extracted from my … Continue reading

Contact Lens Cases and Old Nylons- Oh My!

Another day of finding uses for things that tend to pile up around the house. Do you wear contacts? If you do you probably have more than a handful of the little lens cases. What can you do with them besides toss them out? Time to think outside of the box again. Here are a few things you can do with old contact lens cases. You can store small earrings in them when you are traveling or even just to keep them from getting lost in your jewelry box. Keep your ear plugs clean and close at hand in a … Continue reading

Cleaning Things You Can’t See

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with spring cleaning, there’s so much to do, where to start? And when you are finished, is it really clean or does it just look clean? A few things that are often overlooked during spring cleaning can help your house actually be cleaner. You can see the baseboards but most of these things you can’t see so they don’t get done. Check for mold. Mold is such a huge health hazard that it is worth the time investment to search it out. Check the bathrooms and the basement, but also check the attic. Poor ventilation … Continue reading

Battling Pet Hair

My cousin’s home has hardwood floors, but part of the sealer coat is uneven in an area near the front hall. The semi-sharp edge is where you can typically find a wad of dog hair just about every day. Once he finds the time to reapply sealer in the affected area, I’m sure the dog’s hair won’t get caught there, but until then guests are forced to walk around or (GASP!) on a furball as they make their way to the living room. Being the Dyson lover that I am, I recommended that my cousin purchase a Dyson Pet Vacuum … Continue reading

Pets Prevent Clean Floors

Hardwood floors and dogs don’t mix. At least that’s been my experience. Even the pups that pet shop owners swear don’t shed, shed. All dogs shed. People shed too, but not as much as dogs (at least most people), which is why I am always amazed by dog owners, who say they don’t have to clean up dog hair, now that they have hardwood floors. I have never been to a home with hardwood floors that didn’t attract at least a few tuffs of hair. Pet hair can add up quickly on a hardwood floor, though there are tricks that … Continue reading

Dealing with Dirty Irons

All I want for Christmas is a new iron. Actually, I want a Dyson, but that’s going take Divine Intervention, rather than a chubby guy with a white beard and a red suit. Anyway, about my dirty iron. It would be so easy to junk my gunked-up household appliance, but I know it still has a few good years left in it if I can find the time and energy to clean it. The number one reason you should clean your iron on a regular basis is safety. Learning how to clean an iron will not only spare your clothing … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Home Office

It used to be that you could clean a typical home office in less than 10 minutes. However, these days with so many individuals working from home and the boom in high-tech gadgets which make telecommuting possible, you could spend well over an hour cleaning and organizing your home work space. I used to be able to clean up my home office in 30 minutes. I would arm myself with a can of Pledge, a bottle of Windex, some old rags and a vacuum, and be out in record time. Not so much anymore. Since I work from home I … Continue reading

Driving the Family Germ-mobile

“If you’re a soccer mom, you’re essentially driving a germ-mobile.” Or so claims a microbiologist from the University of Arizona who conducted a study on bacteria levels in people’s vehicles. The conclusion: Most of us are driving around in motorized toilets. Scratch that. Actually, what this germ expert concluded was that in most cases the toilets in our homes are cleaner than the interior of our vehicles. Food for thought the next time you consider loading up the kids for a ride to grandma’s house. Before you start bleaching your dashboard take a look at the details of the study: … Continue reading
