Do’s and Don’ts of Bleach

With so many natural products out there, I’m sure the idea of using bleach is not appealing to everyone. But for those who clean “old school,” such as myself…it is something you can’t imagine being without. However, there are some important dos and don’ts when it comes to using bleach. Although it can be great for disinfecting, removing stains and whitening clothes, you have to be careful about how you use. For instance, although it can help remove mold and mildew, you don’t ever want to mix it with ammonia. Nor do you want it to be anywhere close to … Continue reading

To Bleach Or Not To Bleach

Oh no! Clorox bleach is in danger. I read an article today that sales of Clorox bleach are down and consumers between 25 and 35 buy 30% less bleach than older consumers. It seems the younger generation just didn’t grow up learning how to clean with bleach. The article states that past generations used bleach for washing cloth diapers and cleaning men’s dress shirts at home. Now, the current generation has grown up with disposable diapers and dry cleaners. It seems with more women in the work force Mom hasn’t passed on the tradition of cleaning with bleach. An analyst … Continue reading

What Not to Do To Gravestones

Genealogists have a tendency to want to hang around in graveyards. This is because gravestones can provide a lot of good information about a relative or ancestor. In order to read it, however, the gravestone must be in good condition. Be careful not to damage the stone as you do your genealogy research. Gravestones are a good resource for genealogists. It will say the full name of your ancestor. The stone will have his birthdate, and death date, on it. If you are lucky, the gravestone will say some more details about your ancestor’s life. It could mention that your … Continue reading

Staying On Task….Or Not

I used to clean houses, it was how I earned a living for about eight years. During that time I learned lots of tips and tricks to make things go faster. I also learned to never mix ammonia and bleach. Back in the 80’s we weren’t very green, I used to use oven cleaner on glass shower doors. It worked great as long as you kept it off the metal but it definitely wasn’t the green way to clean! When I cleaned houses I could clean a large house, top to bottom in three hours or less. Why can’t I … Continue reading

Homemade Green Cleaning Products That Work – Bleach Cleaner

Having five daughters means there’s a healthy mix of likes and dislikes, beliefs, and personal or world views to consider. One of my kids is a vegan, two are vegetarian, a few are worried about global warming, some are concerned about animal cruelty, and my 16-year-old pretty much thinks the entire world and everyone in it sucks right now. I try to remain open-minded and support them, but it can be tough and frustrating at times. I’ve stopped buying paper towels and paper plates, though I refuse to stop buying toilet paper! I read labels carefully to be sure they … Continue reading

Here are five tips that will help you make the most of bleach without weakening or ruining your clothes. 1. Check to make sure that your fabrics can withstand bleach. Another Bargain Glass Cleaner

Here is yet one more way to get your glass cleaned without spending your money on commercial cleaners. I’ve talked about glass cleaners before, but I recently discovered a new technique that creates a glass cleaning solution that is as good or better than anything you can find out on the market. I do clean my windows with a vinegar solution because it works well, as well as some of the other methods that I have mentioned in the past. But for a glass cleaner that is really strong and acts just like Windex but without the blue coloring, I … Continue reading

Disturbing New Trend: Teens Drinking Bleach to Pass Drug Test

Here’s news of a disturbing new trend. Apparently, there’s a rumor going around that if you are doing drugs and drink bleach before taking a drug test, you will pass with flying colors. I was reading our local paper yesterday when I ran across the story of three local juveniles who had admitted to drinking bleach to try to pass their drug tests. One juvenile was in court when he passed out. He said that he had not had anything to eat but when paramedics were attending him, he admitted that he had drank bleach earlier in the week. Two … Continue reading
